About the Author

Alexander Strauch was raised in New Jersey and converted to Christ at a Bible camp in New York State. He received his undergraduate degree from Colorado Christian University and went on to earn his Master's in Divinity degree from Denver Seminary. This is a paradigm shifting book. Our American church culture often has a distorted view of eldership and deaconship. This book is a thorough survey of what the Bible really has to say on the matter and will challenge and convict you to serve people with great care and love.

"I doubt that many evangelical leaders would say `It doesn't matter how the U.S. government is structured as long as there is some form of leadership.' Yet, that is precisely what I have heard some evangelical leaders say." (102)The fact is, many people in the church today do not think about church leadership. As long as something is in place, as long as the church is headed in the right direction, that is good enough. Alexander Strauch has written Biblical Eldership to reveal the truth about church leadership, plainly revealed in God's Word.Part One defines what Biblical eldership is. "According to the New Testament concept of eldership, elders lead the church, teach and preach the Word, protect the church from false teachers, exhort and admonish the saints in sound doctrine, visit the sick and pray, and judge doctrinal issues. In biblical terminology, elders shepherd, oversee, lead, and care for the local church." (16)Strauch covers Pastoral Leadership, Shared Leadership, Male Leadership, Qualified Leadership, and Servant Leadership each in a separate chapter. Each chapter is thorough, easy to read, and back up with scripture references throughout.Part Two is a defense of Biblical Eldership. The average church member is not interested in the leadership structure in the church, but it is hugely important. As Strauch says, the structure of church government will help determine how people think and act in the church. In my experience, people just don't want to talk about eldership for one reason or another, choosing to focus on the "more important" issues. However, "the New Testament offers more instruction regarding elders than on other important church subjects such as the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Day, baptism, or the spiritual gifts." (103)Obviously, eldership is hugely important in Scripture and needs to be carefully considered by every local church.Part Three serves as the exposition of Scripture on eldership. It essentially covers the same material as Parts One and Two, but expositionally instead of topically.Part Four includes two short chapters, one on the appointment of elders and one on the relationship with elders and their congregation.Biblical Eldership is a great book that covers an underserved area of theology and should serve as an example for other Christian authors who want to cover church topics. It is Biblical, thorough, and well written. Highly recommended for all readers interested in Biblical leadership in the church.

As Strauch says in this book, he wrote it because no full book had been written on Biblical Eldership. Well, thanks to Strauch, we now have one and it is excellent! The book starts with some passionate, Biblically sound, and powerful chapters on various aspects of church eldership (e.g., Shared Leadership, Servant Leadership) and then moves to specific Scriptural exposition chapters on key texts like Acts, I Timothy, Titus, and others that you might not even associate with eldership like Philippians 1.The book is intentionally light on application (and thus the accompanying study guide), but Strauch consistently demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of Scripture which he obviously obtained throughout his first-hand experience of being a church elder and the work of the Holy Spirit in his life.My only complaint about the book is that, though usually even-handed, Strauch sometimes forces his readers to take his side on debatable issues with words like "clearly," "extremely," and other slight exaggerations unfortunately common to many Christian teachers. But as I said, he is usually even-handed and convincing and the book is still most definitely a 5/5.If you or your church are looking to establish and eldership or bring an existing eldership into greater conformity to Scripture and effectiveness for Jesus, I highly recommend this book!

I used this book along with the associated workbook and Mentor's guide for my most recent round of Indoctrination For Ruling Elder Candidates. It served my purpose very well. Strauch does a good job in basic analysis, communication of points and Biblical emphasis. He very correctly argues vehemently for church elders (non-clerical or "lay" elders as distinguished in some circles) to understand that they are not set aside by God to a secondary position under and subservient to a "clerical" pastor or preacher or what-ever, but are rather are in every sense of the word to be pastors alongside those who are fully employed in the same task. It is refreshing to hear that spoken clearly and articulately and Strauch is to be commended for it.I differ strongly with his position that elders are appointed by other elders and that the congregation does not participate in that process. I believe his exegesis of Acts 14:23 to be incorrect but I hasten to add that there are others in that same camp and it is a discussion which will continue in the history of the church. It is not for this that I rate his work with four instead of five stars. The book is a bit repetitive in some aspects and I find some chapters redundant, not in the chapter titles, but in their content. Once something has been said once, and then repeated for emphasis, it's time to move on.So... I recommend the book for a training resource and general help. The Mentor Guide and the Workbook are valuable also.

A needed viewpoint to remind us what the Bible says about Eldership. It does get redundant at times.

DEFINITE BUY! Such an amazing book duology, itll make you become a hermit for a few days. Very intriguing and recommended for those who like adventure with a little romance.

Wow.I don't know if I can truly capture how amazing this book was in this review, but I will do my best! To start, I listened to Six of Crows via Audible and loved it. I'd never listened to/read a book with so much action; with so many POVs that held their own; with characters that I loved! I honestly can't think of one character that I disliked.This is new for me.Where Six of Crows was intrigue and romance, Crooked Kingdom is knock-down, drag out fights and retribution. We have the same crew (Kaz, Inej, Nina, Wylan, Jesper, and Matthias), but with a different mission and the same pacing!This book is breath-taking, pulse-pounding, and gut wrenching. The ending had me in pieces; on the brink of tears. This book holds nothing back; we lose character(s) we love and find hope in their futures. We see them battling everything they've done their best to overcome; we see them fail; we see them rise above to become more.We see them give into revenge; take the high road; make smart decisions; and make even a few bad decisions. The rag tag team they were before pales in comparison with the family they've become in this book. I'm fighting tears typing this. This book was simply perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it.I just, can't express how amazing this book was. I 100% recommend it.

Six of CrowsBy Leigh BardugoI gave this book a 4 out of 5 starsNo SpoilersI own the physical and the audible copySo to start off I will say this, at first I had started Six of Crows, and then had put it down to start other series, until I read the Grisha series, and it opened my eyes and I understood a bit more about the world and the Grisha’s and what they were. Once I read the Grisha Triology I was able to enjoy this book like I should have been. No idea why, I do know others needed to do the same but at the end of the day I wish I had a heads up on that.With that being said, I loved this book! I loved everything about the characters and the world and how in this series it was focused on a different part then the trilogy. Now I won’t say it is my favorite book in the world, but it is one of those that is worth reading, and probably rereading a couple more times. My favorite characters are going to be Inej and Kaz, and their chemistry with each other and those around them. This isn’t a story about some girl pinning over a guy or some tragic love story, or really a love story at all. Yes it has aspects of one in there but not over the top, its actually very subtle. It has more action and more mystery and more keep you on your toes aspects. Which makes me adore this book. I hope that she keeps this up in the second one and that we get a good final ending in Crooked Kingdom. The word play was spectacular and the story line was captivating. You honestly should pick this series up and read it! Just I recommend reading the Grisha Trilogy first.Crooked KingdomBy Leigh BardugoI gave this book a 5 out of 5 starsNo SpoilersI own the physical and the audible copyHoly Crap. *mind blown* *speechless*Bardugo has completely outdone herself with this one. It made me laugh, it very nearly made me cry, it wrapped me up in an all-consuming blanket of words and didn’t let me go until it was over with, and just left me… Speechless. This is by far my favorite book out of Six of Crows and the Grisha Trilogy.So firstly, can I just say Kaz Brekker “Dirtyhands” is a serious genius? The way that he manipulated everyone and you just never knew or expected what was going to happen next. Piece by piece, a puzzle was laid out and things that happened earlier in the book, you need to remember for later in the book, and it is like an explosion in your brain going “Oh now that makes sense!” Any questions I might have had, they were all answered. She did not leave me wanting, except that I want to know more about Kaz and Inej after the fact, like what adventures they have, what their life is like and so on. This book is a serious roller coaster of emotions. But maybe not just a roller coaster. Maybe an entire amusement park would be a more apt description.She did an amazing job with the different POVs and it wasn’t just 2 or 3 but 6 or 7. And the flow that she kept them in was just beyond words. She juggled them flawlessly and built on the already complex nature of them and just added more layers without missing a beat. There was so many emotions, so many feels that this emotional roller-coaster/amusement park/carnival has left me just like “Wow.” No matter what happens things just crescendo, between the relationships, the dark nature of some of their backgrounds, love found and ultimately lost, and dark, and almost a sexy erotic without making outright sex scenes, but keeping it entertaining with the many many personalities. The violence and the gritty nature just made this book so dark and compelling and a read like I have not had before other than A Court of Mist and Fury but with a completely different tone. It is soul crushing and mind blowing. I just cant get over it yet.I absolutely love all the action and the mischievous nature of our beloved little gang whom was fully developed and when one of them was outraged and crying it pulled on those heart strings and made you want to cry also. (Actually a friend of mine did cry) but I have to say out of my favorite characters Inej is the top of the list along with Nina, Matthias, and of course Kaz. I absolutely loved the dialogue, with all the bantering and the rapport between the characters.But at the end of the day, if you want to know if you should pick up this book. Then the answer is Yes. Dont wait, don’t keep looking through reviews you have to experience this masterpiece of amusement park/roller coaster ride for yourself. It might have finished in the perfect spot, in just the perfect way but Leigh Bardugo… I hope you read this cause How Dare You. You are evil. A brilliantly minded evil genius and I absolutely can’t wait to read yet another series/standalone book written by you.“No Mourners. No Funnerals.”

I would like to start off by saying these are two FANTASTIC books by Leigh Bardugo. Five stars for the books themselves. I am giving a three star rating only because I ordered the box set and it came slightly damaged. I understand these things happen but when it comes with a big rip down the side of the box I cannot forgive that when I shelled out some good money to have the boxed edition.

Review of Six of Crows. Crooked Kingdom review to come.I actually bought the SOC Boxed set for myself for Christmas last year because it was such a fab deal and the reviews were just so fantastic. Well it sat on my book shelf but I never got around to it. As a reading challenge December's read was a book 400 pages or more so in I went. Needless to say I wish I hadn't waited a whole year to read it!!The cast and crew of this book is phenomenal!!! That's the only way to describe them. I thought this would be hard to get through because of the length but boy was I wrong. I devoured it and still want more. Thankfully I have book 2.Out of this world!!! Can't wait to read more by this author.

One of my favorite duologies. This read is for the action loving fantasy reader. The plot is absolutely amazing and something I have never read about before thus making it a unique reading experience for me. The book follows a cast of morally gray characters as they try to preform a heist. Calia Read is an author that I always look forward to reading. When I seen that her newest book revolves around time travel, I was instantly intrigued and excited to read it. She definitely wrapped me around her finger with this book!"The only thing that seems to matter now is how I lived, how I loved, and what I sacrificed for that love."Serene Parow is the epitome of an old soul. She has such a drive and passion for all things from the past, that she owns her own antique shop with her best friend, Liz. She seems happy in the present time. She is engaged to her college boyfriend Will, trying to decide on a wedding date. She goes into work like any other normal day, and starts going through some boxes that Liz bought from a flea market. There is one picture in particular that calls to her. There is a mystery man in this photo that she had dreamed about the previous night. The dream felt so real and life like to her, that she can't stop starring at this photo. It becomes an obsession for Serene, trying to connect the dots surrounding her dream and this photo."Sometimes I think I'm strange, being obsessed with the past. But I believe that the past defines us. It's what brings us to now. "What a plot twist when Serene finds herself in the year 1912. She is frantic, trying to figure out how this happened and what can she do to travel back to the present day. She soon realizes that she is actually married to Etienne in 1912. This is the same man from the photo that she found. He seems gruff, unapproachable, but Serene knows that she has been pulled to the past for a reason. In order for her to discover what she is meant to do in the past, she has to be able to confide in Etienne, about who she really is. The more time these two spend together, the more obvious it becomes that they are meant to be together, no matter all the odds stacked against them."This connection we share is undeniable. It transcends time and all logic. Nevertheless, it's there. Utterly owning us and pushing us out of our comfort zones until all we have left to cling to is each other."I personally found this to be a very powerful and thought provoking novel. Everything is not always as it appears, sometimes we have to dig deep within ourselves to find the courage to keep moving forward. Serene was one of the most strong heroines that I have read in a long time. She lived vicariously, and enjoyed every moment. I was utterly and completely in love with Serene and Etienne. I was fascinated by all of it, the entire book. I felt as though I was a friend within their inner circle, and was watching them come together for the first time. The entire novel was described so well, that I could picture myself walking the grounds of Belgrave. I loved how this shows that love can transcend time."Love is hoarse cries. It's anger. It's sadness. It's happiness and laughter. It's everything wrapped into one. Love is one of the heaviest of words to exist. It's a miracle anyone survives it. It'll be a wonder if I survive it."

I got the book through Kindle Unlimited but it was so great I went ahead and bought it so I can reread it (and reread it). There are some stories that stay with you and this story will be one that you’ll not soon forget. I actually loaned it to my sister (the first time I’ve ever loaned an ebook to anyone) because I NEED people to read this tale. YOU need to read this tale. Trust me. It’s easily THE best book I’ve read in 2018.I don’t know where to begin other than to say Calia Read is an amazing author who has woven a tale of love that stands and spans time, decades, a century. Serene and Etienne have a love story borne that defies the confines of time. I held my breath, found myself smiling, felt my heart breaking only to be put together again. Rarely do you find a book in which you have no idea (truly, NO idea) what will happen, but in this book, every page unveils a new mystery. I could not put this book down....would not put this book down. I fell in love with both Etienne and Serene. Their characters are simply magical together and intriguing on their own. Ms. Read has accomplished a rare feat and created a time travel romance worthy of accolades.This story is beautiful. It’s magical. It will leave you breathless, happy, sad, longing for a time gone by, and rooting for a seemingly impossible love. I cannot wait to read more of Etienne and Serene’s unforgettable story. My heart will never be the same after this book and neither will yours. This is a must-read, cannot miss book.

I have read Calia’s works before, but this is the best I believe ever to grace us. Her storytelling has intensified to epic portions (for the better).I was so captivated and immersed in this journey from the very first word to the very last letter. Time Travel (check) , Mystery (check) and Historical Romance (check)- outstanding combination and beautifully written.It has been a very long time since I “felt” the emotions and attachments to fictional characters. I hate using the word “fictional”, what an understatement. The descriptiveness of time and place, I automatically was transported, feeling like a bystander witnessing every happening. Did I mention it has been so long since experiencing the depth of feelings for the characters and having long lasting effects?“ I believe that relics from the past show what life truly is, they start out so beautifully, but slowly fade with time”Time, I was on the edge of my seat throughout.
