Review

"This stand-out memoir chronicles Stefanovic’s life from her childhood to early twenties, coming back and forth between Yugoslavia and Australia during the Yugoslav wars...Stefanovic’s story is as unique and wacky as it is important." —Esquire "This is a lively, hilarious coming-of-age memoir, with the dark shadow of one of the most brutal conflicts in recent history always looming."—Refinery29 “A poignant, charming, and gorgeously written account of the complexities of navigating the immigrant experience and finding a home — especially when the place you used to call home no longer exists as it once did… Fresh, vibrant, and enlightening, Miss Ex-Yugoslavia is a stunning immigrant narrative that will tug at your heartstrings the whole way through." —Bustle “Smart, spirited….Full of lively anecdotes. Stefanovic tells her story of immigration and displacement, childhood pleasures and teenage angst.” —Booklist (starred review) "Sofija Stefanovic’s beautiful memoir Miss Ex-Yugoslavia depicts the elegant transit of a girl becoming an artist. This is a story we yearn to know: How does a girl lose her childhood, family, and nation, yet nurture her memories, dreams, and art? Stefanovic hits all her marks, and she keeps us in her thrall.” —Min Jin Lee, author of Pachinko, a New York Times Bestseller and National Book Award Finalist “Funny and tragic and beautiful in all the right places. I loved it.” —Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Let’s Pretend this Never Happened and Furiously Happy “[A] brilliant debut memoir… Tongue planted firmly in cheek, Stefanovic’s memoir is equal parts raucous coming-of-age story, heartbreaking family drama, and quest for identity — topped with generous handfuls of political and historical introspection...Stefanovic is such a gifted, natural storyteller that all these elements blend together seamlessly, sometimes in the same paragraph, resulting in an authentic glimpse into a life filled with love and fear; hope and despair. It’s a marvel… Filled with Yugo-rock and news reports, Baby Sitters Club books and revolution, Miss Ex-Yugoslavia is a remarkable work from an exceptional storyteller." —The Cedar Rapids Gazette

A sweet story opening with a teenage beauty contest for the honor of Miss Ex-Yugoslavia, what comes next? The wholeness that was and is and can not be?**Sofija Stefanovic writes in a charming style rich in imagery, she creates her environs decisively --- a sentence or two captures it all and she carries you with her as she year by year learns the full meaning of her nation’s meaning “Yugoslavia” home of the South Slavs – a nation that was and all that follows ....If you know that story you will enjoy her telling and if you do not you will miss some of the drama she is carrying, but perhaps not, for it is the story of love and life and all of mankind’s failings to let the Past rest.***Go to the internet and read a description of the six republics, then add four languages and three major religions, and a Latin and Cyrillic alphabet, factor in the Allied and Axis forces of WWII that divided the nation, add the Turkish Empire, Austria-Hungarian empires that dominated once.Open chapter One and see the girls loving one another regardless -- and enjoy what follows.A tale well told and a run on Australia and immigrant transition as well; a powerful little story.5 stars* Advise for a Yugoslav’s transition to English as the rolled r’s must fall away in all four languages. (“Although the Serbian language has a smaller vocabulary, it contains much more profanity than English does.”) That is an understatement.**Another story showing the pain of disintegration worth of reading: Obreht, Tea The Tiger's Wife: A Novel***Yugoslavia: Death of a Nation Laura Silber & Allen Little, see 3 Star review.

As a fellow migrant to Australia albeit at an earlier time, I felt the author’s portrayal of the experience was accurate and insightful. Both my husband and I were interested in reading about the breakup of the former Yugoslavia from the perspective of someone who was impacted by the events, and even more historical analysis would have been fine with us. The book was easy to read and the disarming humor was an added element. It is easy for me to recommend this book.

This is a delightful book! It is simultaneously funny and sad. It takes place on multiple levels and each one touches the reader's soul. For those who have been displaced, either voluntarily or involuntarily, this book will resonate because of the universal feelings of nostalgia for what is left behind and hope for what lies in the future. I will not summarize the plot- it is not necessary. Suffice it to say that this book speaks to those who, having uprooted once, end up belonging everywhere and nowhere for the rest of their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir and look forward to more stories from Ms. Stefanovic.

I bought this book after hearing a couple of the author’s stories on The Moth. I was intrigued to know more. Her book is wonderful and I read it quickly in my every spare moment. Her writing is beautifully descriptive about people and places. Her memoir explores her experience as a teenager and as an immigrant. I also appreciated how she weaves in how the decade of wars in the former Yugoslavia affected every aspect of her life. Terrific book.

I loved this book. It starts out as a bit of comic fluff, but the book is anything but. The self-aware author recounts her young life in Yugoslavia and Australia in a way that reveals both her inner life and the lives of those around her, including those affected by the conflicts in what was once Yugoslavia. A very good read. A page-turner.

Hilarious and poignant. As a native of Serbia who grew up in America during the same years as the author, I have much to relate to, to laugh over, and to cry over. So glad I've discovered this book. Reminds me I am not alone in trying to understand and integrate my tumultuous heritage and my present-day life.

One of the best books I've ever read, a magical and unforgettable experience. I'm very thankful to the author for this. The book will be an unforgettable journey in time and space for anybody from countries that no longer exist and for anybody with a mixture of culture backgrounds. I also highly recommend it for anybody with an interest in the countries that once formed Yugoslavia. For those who fit none of the categories it will still be an exciting read.

Good review of history of Yugoslavia and its breakup.
