Now that I have discovered the series of Eyewitness Books that I once purchased for my son when he was young (Can't believe he's beginning his senior year in college!), I enjoy going over them and reflecting on the value of this series for younger readers.It is important that our youth understand the world around them--including a knowledge of science. This volume focuses on the volcano and earthquakes. Given the role--especially--of earthquakes in American history, this is a valuable volume.The book begins with a basic point (Page 6): "Volcanoes and earthquakes are nature run wild." The first part of the work explores volcanoes. This includes the basics, including an examination of Vesuvius, what underlies the development of a volcano, volcanoes on other plants, and so on.Then, a discussion of earthquakes. The basics: what they are, why they happen, what the consequences are.All in all, a very nice introduction to these natural phenomena for younger readers (and parents might learn a whole bunch as well, just as I did).

DK books are consistently high-quality. This one is no exception.Good layout, crisp imagery, good information laid out in such a way that both my children were interested in multiple viewings of the book. It's still a highly trafficked book by them, along with several other DK books.This is, of course, a book with just informational highlights about volcanoes and earthquakes, so don't expect to read a scholarly journal if you purchase it.As an overview, however, the book does an outstanding job.The book is a perfect example of why, when looking for books for the kids' library, I always focus on finding DK books first. That approach hasn't failed me yet. In a very general sense, bravo to DK's authors and layout professionals.

And with the book printed in 2008 then being up to date. And the CD, and back in the book the A1 bill for putting on the wall, also being fine.As everybody know we here close to Thailand out in the ocean the 26th of December in 2004 we one of the biggest earthquakes known in history in the last hundreds of years, which resulted in hundred of thousand person who died over big parts of the World. And sometimes we in the house can feel that we again have an earthquake. In Denmark from were I come we have no idea about volcano or earthquake other than what we learn in school, the news, or maybe as tourist in another country.

My students love looking at the pictures. I give it to my accelerated kids that finish early. I tell them to find something that interests them and then research it with on netbooks.

Nephew requested present. He loved it.

My 4-year-old grandson has developed an interest in volcanoes (He's his mother's boy!) and I was given the task of finding books for him. I found a few for young children, and although he is much younger than the age group recommended for this book, I have had a long-standing purchase history with Eyewitness Books, so I ordered it. It is his favorite of the books I got -- he loves the graphics and photos, and his Mom and brother read the text to him. He has favorite pages, and even looks for "toy volcanoes and earthquakes" when he's at the store with his family.

I have an autistic child who loves earthquakes, and he is having so much fun with this. The pictures and dvd are wonderful. Would def. recommend...

The entire collection is fantastic (not only this book, but any within the collection). I gave 5 books to my boys for Christmas and keep getting more until I finish the collection. DK books are particularly good for kids because of the ridiculous number of drawings, graphics, and photographs. Worth every penny.

Let me preface this buy saying I love the Eye Witness books as a whole. I used to read them often as a kid and loved the awesome pictures with the short and concise explanations. Great information.My biggest problem with this particular book is that their are multiple pictures of statues showing full male genetalia in the pages of this book. I feel that these pictures of this nature are unnecessary in a book made for children. Nevermind the fact that this is a book about volcanoes not statues.

I was looking for an authentic japanese cookbook and this one is definitely authentic. The techniques section in this book makes it worth buying just for that. The only drawback is this book has very few if any recipes that are just vegetables, almost all of them has some kind of meat. Sure she uses tofu in some of the dishes but she usually includes some sort of meat in it too. I think now i'm going to have to buy her vegetarian book to balance this one out. I like the recipes just wish it was more balanced and more like real japanese home cooking which usually has very little meat in it.

This is my 3rd book from E.Andoh and I like the simplicity of her books. This book has no photos (old book) but very nice drawings to illustrate techniques.

I loved this cookbook so much I photocopied the entire (out of print) copy my library had several years ago, which cost me at least three times what I would've paid if I could've bought it new. I'm thrilled to find it used, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Everything I have made from this book over the last 10 or 12 years has been delicious (with the exception of a failed rice bran pickle experiment I forgot about when I went on vacation...whoops). Elizabeth Andoh is to Japanese cooking what Barbara Tropp was to Chinese; passionate, knowledgeable, down to earth, the kind of cook you wish was your neighbor.

Hands down, this is my FAVORITE Japanese cookbook. Elizabeth Andoh, an American married to a Japanese, is not only a fine cook, cooking teacher, and journalist in her own right, but is in the unique position of being an American consultant to the Japanese food industry. This is her first cookbook, published in 1980 (it was followed by "An American Taste of Japan" in 1985). It's a primer of "pure" Japanese home cooking -- like Mama used to make, if your mama happened to be Japanese. I learned to cook in the kitchens of Japanese friends, and the flavors of Ms. Andoh's recipes make me swooningly "natsukashii" (nostalgic) for Japan.The book's 130 recipes are organized in the classic order of Japanese cuisine: soups, rice, noodles, braised and simmered foods, grilled foods, deep-fried foods, steamed foods, mixed and sauced foods, pickles, and sweet things and beverages. No photographs, but crystal clear recipes are complemented by beautiful line drawings that illustrate ingredients and techniques. A section in the front details Japanese cooking techniques and equipment, while a glossary at the back not only translates the names of unusual ingredients, but explains how to choose and store them. In all, it's a wonderful book that I can't recommend highly enough.

While learning to cook for my Japanese husband, he was never quite satisfied with the Japanese dishes I tried to cook for him. That is, not until I started using the recipes in Ms Anodoh's book, At Home with Japanese Cooking. After that he never complained that the meals were "not like his mother used to make."

As a teacher, I LOVE having these comics in the classroom as a resource. The kids want to read them because they are comics, and they "accidentally" end up learning a whole lot of history along the way. The fifth graders I have now seem to really enjoy the little crab characterLove the teaching resources that accompany each comic. Love that difficult words are explained. Love having visual representations to make history come alive for kids.In summary: love, love love!

I use these in home schooling and they are excellent. The author has worksheets and additional material on the website as well. Highly recommended.

These have been a great addition to our history curriculum as we are studying the Civil War.

Boyd combines the best aspects of historian and comic book author in this series. All of the Chester titles are excellent, but this is one of my favorites.It is clear that this historian is fluent in comics. The layouts are engaging and dramatic, and always imaginative. Buy this for your child to help him or her learn history; buy it for your child if he or she loves art, as well, because the use of space, color, and perspective will grab your young artist's imagination as much as the information will. The villainously looming Roger Taney is a favorite of mine.Another commenter felt that this "tilts left", but I disagree. In fact, I especially appreciate the way that Boyd shows both sides of those 19th century debates, thereby enriching students' understanding of the complexity of the conflicts. There ARE some villains defending slavery (Taney, among others), and Boyd does not dabble in false equivalencies, but the positions of the day are well summarized without being reduced to partisan talking-points. The book also doesn't gloss over the violence of Nat Turner and John Brown. These topics also appear in Boyd's other books (I am thinking of Harriet Tubman, in particular, who stars in the "Wonder Women" title).(Disclosure: I am a schoolteacher and I know Bentley Boyd)

Boyd's Chester the Crab Comics are solid history that appeals to young readers. The timeline and bright, comic format make the books easy to read and Chester, the wise and wise-cracking crab is the guide through visits to each time and place in the past. But don't let the format fool you, even topics like slavery in Slavery's Storm are given complexity. Boyd does not shy away from painful parts of the American past and young readers feel like they are taken seriously when they are presented with the details that make history full of contradictions. My 8 year old son asks for these books.

While I think comics are an excellent way to teach children I thought in this particular book the author had a definite left leaning bias in how he presented his stories and what he chose to highlight.

I'm a mom with a family of boys. We have all the Bentley Boyd Civil War series.This book doesn't thrill me.First, it treats Nat Turner as a lunatic, instead of a serious person. Instead of this chapter, I recommend Nat Turner and the Virginia Slave Revolt (Journey to Freedom: The African American Library) Caution parents: this book discusses the violence, but I think it does an excellent job opening the discussion of how do courageous, moral people deal with unrelenting oppression? Use both books together, but understand that Boyd's portrayal of Turner as a crazyhead is condescending.Second, the section on the Mexican War is exciting, but... a) Why does the book leave out the information that the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo included $15Million in payment for the territorial cession? b) Why does Boyd say, "This land comes at a high price. This is the most UNJUST war ever fought by a strong nation against a weak one.", without including the MONETARY price paid to Mexico in settlement for the land? c) And how "strong" was the US in this war, when Boyd shows 5 pages of the US just barely winning the war? d) And why does the page titled, "WHAT LAND DID MEXICO GIVE THE US?" not include the information that the land was PAID FOR? Just curious. This is bad history.The section on Dred Scott is very well done, and the section on John Brown is very entertaining. Those two sections saved the book.I also recommend Before the Civil War: 1830-1860- Graphic U.S. History (American History (Saddleback)) (except it's VERY Mormon) and the Betsy Maestro US History books for children - well illustrated.
