I’ve been a calligrapher for years and I’m always looking for a book that offers more inspiration to push me forward. This book definitely hit the mark. If you’re looking for more basic instruction on letter formation and technique, this will give you a bit of that but there are other books out there that are more detailed and step by step for a total newbie.Where this book shines is in 2 ways:1. The author’s style is very approachable and focuses on the value in creating instead of the need to pursue perfection. As a hobbyist I find this to be a refreshing perspective because most people who pick up a nib do not have the time to invest in becoming a master penman.2. This book offers projects that I’ve never seen elsewhere. While some require purchasing some supplies, most rely on basics that you will have or could easily/cheaply acquire. I look forward to trying many of them!

I have some experience with calligraphy, learning a few years ago. I love it, the beauty, the meditative process of doing calligraphy. It's truly a zen experience, something we have less of with all the technology and our busy lives. So, when I heard that Maybelle was releasing her book, I knew I had to have it. I have drooled over her work over the years.The book is gorgeous, rich with beautiful imagery. It's hard not to keep turning the page to see the next project and all her samples of work to inspire and build from. But, the most surprising part was reading her story, commentary, inspirational notes. It feels like Maybelle is there with you, guiding and inspiring you, not just for calligraphy, but in life. As a creative/artist myself, I needed a little reminder, as I'm trying to find my way again. I never dog ear books, but the messages so resonated with me, I dogeared pg. 11, 13, and 195. I remember after my first look at the book; I closed the book and just felt positive, happy, recharged, and motivated.I love it, and can't wait to start on the projects, practice my calligraphy and when needed, flip open my dogeared pages. So, if you need some beauty, zen, or inspiration in your life, this is the book for you.

I mostly like thus book. It does give a clear picture of the difference between what is living and non-living. I took one star off for occasional excessive wordiness. The other star was taken off, just because I think potential readers of this book ought to be warned that it also talks about dieing. My three year old wasn't happy to find out that baby birds who fall from the nest will never move again and are "dead"

This is a very nice book that explains what living things are and shows the similarities of animals and plants even though they don't "look" the same. My 3 yo has quickly grasped the idea of what's living and non living in the first 3 pages of the book and by the time we reached half of the book, she can pretty much tell what's living and non living in all of the things I've asked her to identify. Great book! (if you're taking advantage of the free shipping by the way, amazon will take advantage of the 10 day shipping period. Ours EXCEEDED 10 days! This book is just so nice so its well worth the wait!)

Living things eat, drink, sleep and grow - a simple explanation with examples that will appeal to most small children (e.g. cats, dogs, birds). Living things also die, and this is touched upon very briefly. I am always looking for books to assist me in homeschooling my 5 yr old son, and it's difficult to find educational books that don't bore or beat a topic into the ground. This was a satisfying choice.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter likes this book. So do I. I had to edit one page about death but it all makes since. I was surprised one day when she told someone that dogs need energy and she proceeded to tell them that they get energy from food, water and the sun. Blew me out of the water! Children are like sponges and they want to know how things work just like we do. These books are great at introducing the facts of life to young children and they can explain it better than I can.

A great follow up story for talking about living and non-living.

I teach special education and have found this a simple and concrete way to introduce the topic of living and non-living things. My students enjoyed the book and I would recommend it for teachers and parents.

Abraham Silberschatz is the Sidney J. Weinberg Professor of Computer Science at Yale University. Prior to joining Yale, he was the Vice President of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Prior to that, he held a chaired professorship in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include database systems, operating systems, storage systems, and network management.Professor Silberschatz is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering. He received the 2002 IEEE Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the 1998 ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and the 1997 ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award. I like reading this book. The authors did a pretty decent job taking a hard subject and writing about in a way I could understand, and organizing the sections in a way that builds your knowledge. My professor gave us a number of hard programming assignments in C that followed the book as well and reinforced that knowledge. So if you use this book within the right system, it can be very good. I don't think it would be easy for a beginner to just read however. You really need to dive into some of the things that you read about and get your hands dirty to gain the full value from this book. My graduate class was able to cover 6 chapters completely plus a spattering from a few other chapters in one semester. It was a very worthwhile class.

Very succinct book for early learners like myself (neophytes as my teacher calls us). There is the full linux kernel development book in its fifth edition, but that can be dense and frustrating for beginners. This Operating System Concepts Essentials has a great accompanying website with lots of great code examples and various resources that are very helpful.

Loving this book. Had to purchase for my Operating Systems Theory class. When I saw that the regular edition cost over 100 bucks I was ready to grit my teeth and just buy it. Then I heard about the Indian edition which was insanely cheaper so I bought it without a second thought. Shipping was fast and the book is high quality. Some people complain the pages are too thin and you can’t concentrate because the text bleeds through; while the paper is thinner, I am not distracted by the very light bleed that comes through. Maybe if you hold a single page up to the light and try to read them you’ll get distracted...As for content, this book is great. After finishing a particularly long chapter, I found myself continuing to read simply because I was feeling more curious about what the author would talk about next.This edition is great!

Had to get this book for a class. The most confusing book I have every read, typos and you will need to read over the chapters twice to get what it being said. Best to use the Powerpoint on the linked site to get the summary of each chapter or just go to the summary within the chapter. I know they author's tried well to break down the subject but it seemed at times that it was too much filler and not just enough for what need to be explained.

This is a very well written book on operating system design, multiprogramming, threads and all the great things that go on inside your computer while it runs an operating system. It requires some prerequisite knowledge of computer hardware and some programming. As other reviewers have stated, it is not a freshman level book. It is however, an excellent guide for people studying software design.It seems to be lacking in some areas, the section on semaphores was probably the worst area of the book. I had to turn to Tanenbaum's works for better information. Overall though, worthy of four stars.Unfortunately, I have to add to my review that I am deeply disappointed in the direction the publisher has taken with respect to the text. I find it distasteful that publishers have gone from printing student solutions manuals to requiring access to a web site. Fortunately, the editions have not changed that much and the questions are still available in solutions manuals of prior editions or perhaps if you are lucky, someone has a PDF of them. Likewise, leading search engines can provide sources for researching the solution to see if your answer is correct.

This book was the required reading for one of my college programming courses. The authors go in to good details about the specifics of all subjects relating to operating systems in general. Some that were notable were the use and creation of semaphore objects, threading, CPU scheduling, and disk scheduling algorithms. The semaphores and threading were particularly useful in completing the classic synchronization problem 'The Dining Philosophers' which was one of the assignments for the course. The breakdown of disk organization was another very beneficial and highly interesting topic. The book covers MAC OS, Linux, Unix, Windows, as well as some information about older systems such as DOS and CP/M. The book has generalized examples and each topic includes a good deal of theory. I do not recommend this book for people without a solid foundation of C or C++. It helps to know Assembly as well, but not necessary.

This book has been around for many editions. I really enjoyed reading it. The author has good explanations with plenty of examples.

Excellent new book! The price is much cheaper, compared to the hardcover version, but the content is the same.

As much of a fan I've been of all of Barron's Merlin books, this one wasn't his best. The characters were not nearly as good as his other books and the storyline felt like book two or three, just with a different main character.

I really enjoyed reading the seriesMerlin is one of my favorite subjects as well as dragons so the series puts two them together

I can't even fairly rate this book, because I wouldn't have considered buying it for myself.You know, I may be old-school, but I think a book description is supposed to be, oh, I don't know, a DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK. I don't want a brief synopsis of the accomplishments of the author. I want to know what the BOOK. IS. ABOUT. Of the first six books in the Merlin series, only Books 5 and 6 even bother to summarize the book. Seriously, it doesn't matter how good a book is, if nobody knows what it's about, you aren't going to get a lot of cold sales. Book descriptions sell books, period. Pretty covers don't sell them. Moderately known (not famous, sorry) authors don't sell books. Wanting to read a story sells books. And if the author can't be bothered to write a synopsis of his story, I'll find another book.

This series is an incredible journey... one that speaks to you on a deep level.

Merely a continuation of the previous book. Mostly predictable and obviously leading up to a huge finale. Hopefully the next book will be a bit more exciting. A good read.

I have at least 6 different Spanish-English dictionaries and some are special purpose like ones for construction and "Costa Rica Spanish" and the hit rate on finding a word I come across in them is about 75% except for the Christopher Howard Official Guide to Costa Rican Spanish where the hit rate for me has been about 25%. With this dictionary my hit rate so far has been 100% and this included the very obscure (for the dictionary editors at least) word taller that all my other dictionaries translate as an artist studio but the New World adds the usage of the word for a garage or repair shop.Not very compact for travel but I am tempted to buy a second copy and tear it in half and take only the Spanish to English section. It is a Castilian Spanish dictionary so many words used in Mexico, Central, and South America are not going to be in it but that is too be expected and not too different from the various English idioms in use in different parts of the world.

As mentioned by other reviewers what could be an ideal midsize study dictionary small enough to easily browse as the one-stop shop for looking up words in either language is hampered by the inexplicable decision not to include the gender of Spanish nouns when looking up words in the English-Spanish section. I own the Oxford New Spanish Dictionary, Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary for Students, and Merriam-Webster's Pocket Spanish-English Dictionary, all 3 of which are smaller but include the gender of Spanish nouns when you're looking up an English-Spanish translation. On the plus side, of the 4, The New World contains the most entries, it is about the same size book as the Oxford, standard paperback novel size, but about twice as thick. Besides that, one major reason I am glad I got this dictionary and keep it by my side is that unlike the other 3, it includes IPA pronunciation in parentheses for both English AND Spanish. Oxford & Merriam Webster only include IPA pronunciation for the English words in the English-Spanish part, strange in dictionaries designed for Anglophones who hopefully already know how to pronounce English & are studying Spanish. Yes, unlike English, Spanish pronunciation is consistent & straightforward, but there are still times when a Spanish word is giving me trouble, and when I look it up in here, there in parentheses is the IPA pronunciation to clear up confusion. It even includes both Castilian and Latin American pronunciations in cases where they differ. This is my go-to paper dictionary for looking up Spanish words, but due to the one big aforementioned flaw, I'll go to the Oxford or Webster for English-Spanish, lest I be forced to look up a noun twice in The New World first to get the English-Spanish translation then flip to look up the gender in the Spanish-English section because this dictionary couldn't include a simple f or m next to the Spanish noun translation.

Pretty upset with the "definitions" some words have (some do not have any at all). If you're looking for the definition of a word in Spanish, guess what, you have to look for that word in the English section to get the definition of it IN SPANISH! It is a lot of back and forth and it drives me nuts but my kids seem to enjoy doing the extra work so they can learn new words....I was hoping it would be separate sections with the words and definitions in that specific language not how it is.Other than that, it does its job and my kids are learning how to communicate with me in Spanish.

Yes, there are a couple of problems. Occasionally, the English translation is more Spanglish than correct, but the bigger problem, which has already been mentioned, is the lack of gender indication for the Spanish translation of English nouns. In spite of that, however, this is a dictionary that emphasizes "New World" Spanish. I often find it helpful to consult this dictionary (for the New World) along with another, more traditional dictionary, that tends to give a more European version.

A young person I know took me up on an offer to send him a gift book and he wanted a dictionary. I looked at various dictionaries at bookstores and here on Amazon (where I wind up buying the bulk of my things these days). I felt this was the best one due to its versatility, the easy way it was organized and for the size. It turned out to be a perfect gift: the person I sent it to absolutely loved it. I lived in Spain in the mid 70s for about four years and know the value of a really good, compact Spanish/English, English/Spanish Dictionary. I carried a little red one wherever I went. This other person is using this the same way but this dictionary is far better organized and complete than the one I used. I recommend this for people who need it and particularly for young people studying Spanish (or English). Yes, a big book is great but a solid, compact easy to carry book is even better in many instances (or put it on your Kindle)

Real good dictionaries. If it came in hardcover and a bit larger type I'd buy that one too.

Wish it reported the masculine or feminine classification of nouns along with the translations in the English section. Book feels good in the hand, nice materials, holding up well.

My daughters have been using this book for four years. I had to order a new one because they trashed it. It is perfect if they are learning Spanish in school.

My online teacher recommended this dictionary. It's really great, because when we do class activities that involve the dictionary, she says the page number and I can find it quickly. It wasn't a requirement, so some kids have other dictionaries and it takes them longer to find words. I really like that it has English to Spanish as well as Spanish to English
