"Death in the Afternoon" is a non fiction account of bullfighting in Spain by Ernest Hemingway. The book combines a detailed, sometimes painful, account of bullfighting with the classic Hemingway writing style. In that context this book provides an interesting juxtaposition to Hemingway novels. While non fiction, there is definite evidence of the Hemingway literary style.Ernest Hemingway seemingly lived a life of the classic, so called, "man's man" and with that in mind some of this narrative is predictable. Mr. Hemingway does his best to portray bullfighting as a classic and honorable art form, while some readers may find the subject matter cruel and gruesome. There are also some brief asides about other subjects including homosexuality that seemed disparaging. Given the timeframe and the fact that the author is Hemingway, some of that is also predictable. I do not intend to defend bullfighting, but I did find the book educational and I am glad that I read it.I have previously read numerous Hemingway novels and one non fiction, "A Moveable Feast". As literature I liked this book very much and feel it is an interesting work to compare and contrast to "A Moveable Feast". Hemingway reveals a good bit about himself and one can tell when Hemingway has "an axe to grind".In summary, I liked this work as a reading experience and am definitely glad that I read it. I have no intention of defending bullfighting. There are other Hemingway works that I find distasteful, such as the novel "To Have and Have Not" and the short story "Up In Michigan", works that I did not like either as subject matter or as literature. That is not the case with this book. Thank You...

Death In The Afternoon is one of my favorite books. I have read it now 3 times. This book is expertly written as you would expect from Hemingway. The book is the gold standard by which all other books on the subject of bull fighting is compared to. Most of the men Hemingway writes of were all active in the earlier days of bullfighting. He goes into great depth and detail to explain each part of the even as well as the different people who are active in each segment and what they do. Hemingway also fully explains all the passes found in the fight and explains in minuet detail the history of the fighting even down to ranches that raised the best fighting bulls. If you have any interest in bull fighting do take the time to read this book. This is Hemingway at his very best.

I came this book indirectly after watching the 2015 movie "Papa Hemingway in Cuba." I have admired his books since high school, and I was aware of this book by Hemingway but I really did not understand what the book was about until I read it. Now, I think it is one of his best books. It is absolutely about bull-fighting, and in detail. But Hemingway is really writing about life as a whole. He is writing about a time in his life when he was in love with life. The descriptions of towns and farms and people and the bull-fights are beautiful. It is a man's view, but this man was a master of words.

This book was a genuinely delightful surprise. I love Hemingway, as many people do, and some of his works such as The Sun Also Rises, The Green Hills of Africa and A Moveable Feast, I have read again and again. But I put off reading this book as it just seemed a little hard to swallow a 485 page book that is explaining bullfighting. Wow, was I surprised. First off, we all know Hemingway loved bullfighting and was an aficionado to say the least. But as begins this book his candor and almost gossipy manner is so much looser and just plain funny. It was almost like reading an Anthony Bourdain book. He describes certain types of hack writers as just creating "erectile writing," and as he analyzes things he refers to himself jokingly as Dr. Hemingstein. But the other side of the humor in this book is the wonderful way he describes regions of Spain, talking about how at one location you can purchase the freshest strawberries and fresh asparagus as big around as my finger to sup on before the fights. He describes why you have to go visit Madrid and Ronda, not just because of the bullfights, but because of the culture and beauty. Hemingway was in love with Spain and in this book his passion for Spain oozes out of every page. The stories he tells about the bullfighters are inspiring and interesting, describing an almost subculture of humanity who stare death in the face everyday and are brave in a way that goes beyond normal. If you like Hemingway I would strongly recommend you read this book.

I first read this book in hardcover format over 50 years ago and it has not lost any of it's magic.Much has changed since Hemingway wrote it. My memories of the bulls, corridas and faenas are more recent with names such as Miguel Baez El Litri, Manolo Gonzalez, Antonio Ordonez, El Codobes and others gracing the bull rings, giving both excellent and poor afternoons as they showed courage, and sometimes fear, of the bulls that had been allotted to them. In those years Angel Peralta, the rejonador, who carried out the faena from his beautiful horses, always made a very unique spectacle.After going to many bull fights and novilladas over the years, I experienced ones where the "duende" had entered the ring, and everything went well, and to those where the bullfighters had cushions thrown at them as they failed in their duties.To see the bulls in their corral,at a bull ranch at El Escorial, near Madrid, a few days before they were taken to the fight, one sensed that bulls and man are made for one another to share in the artistry and tragedy that has to end in death, of one or the other, or both.Hemingway's book is for all those who want to understand this artistry and tragedy, before this unique event passes to history, as it has already done in Barcelona.

I HIGHLY recommend this book --- have bought five more for Christmas presents and to loan to friends !Given what's going on in this country, I have found my heart-mind hardening to people whose beliefs and actions differ from mine. So when I was invited to Thanksgiving with a group of Trump supporters, I accepted as a spiritual growth opportunity. My first Zen teacher said, 'You can be right, or you can be free." I've been choosing 'right' over 'free' much of this year. Intolerance of intolerance is still intolerance. And my usual spiritual tools have not always been effective.Thankfully, Will Wise led a group I was in the week before Thanksgiving, and I immediately saw a way 'home' with his work. He gave me a key tag with "Listen to Win" on one side and "Listen to Understand" on the other, and I resolved to Listen to Understand in this situation.I bought this book and 'crammed' for Thanksgiving. I love that Will practices what he preaches and shares stories from his own life, and includes Traps and Tools for each section. Although we never got into 'politics,' if they had come up, rather remain silent, I was prepared to say, "We definitely have different beliefs in this situation" --- without judgment.Will's process for asking powerful questions include Intention, Rapport, Openness, Listening and Empathy. I used them all, and the boundaries around my heart dissolved to reveal the Love within.

It is no small thing to set out to write a book, let alone one with the potential to so beautifully and positively impact every interaction and every relationship between every human being. Mr. Wise shares insight and practical application ideas for developing more than rapport only: he introduces methodology for the reader to consider so she can choose to be present and intentional with her neighbors - whoever they may be and wherever they show up. This book is extremely thorough and has recipes for the Instant Pot Cookbook. I have tried several 500 Quick & Easy Days of Cooking, it really looked as though that was well. The introductory chapters within the book is awesome useful to Easy-to-Remember and Quick. Highly recommended

This is an excellent instant pot cookbook. A lot of recipes with good instructions. It's quite well-written, an excellent cookbook with lots of good recipes and details. I highly recommended this book to everyone!!!

Although the recipes were easy to follow, I only found 5 that I would consider making. Most of the recipes were for variations of chili. Very disappointed in the cookbook.

Disclaimer: Read as an ARC via Netgalley. But note, I did purchase when it was released.3.5Okay, to say that this book is dry would be fair. At the most basic, it is a legal history of birth control and abortion from the later days of Sanger to the 1990s. Undoubtedly, a legal student or scholar would get more out of it than a general reader. But Garrow does a very good job at making what is dry in subject matter, very readable. So the dry feeling is not from Garrow's writing.Yet, this is a book that you must read if you are woman – regardless of how you feel about abortion.And you should read it if you are a man.Hell, you should read it if you live in the United States.I use to tell people that to talk about abortion they needed to read Roe vs. Wade in some form – an edited version of the dissent and decision at the very least. Now, I am going to say Roe vs. Wade and Garrow’s work. I understand more about the debate and history then I did before. Garrow does humanize some of the players (and not just the ones you would think); he also illustrates the history that gets lost in the argument. Everyone knows about the coat hangers and such because of buttons, but there are facts in here that are even more shocking and disturbing the development of the law. It’s true, most of the focus is on the East Coast but considering the history, this isn’t all that surprising. And it is a legal history, not a general one.And I really don't know what else to say about this book. Isn't that enough?Okay, one more thing:I want to thank Open Road Media. Long ago, they became one of the “reliable” publishers for me. You know a publisher where if you haven’t heard of the author, you are still willing to try it simply because of the publishing house. A good portion of what Open Road does is make back listed books available for the ereader. I applaud the fact that much of these books are connected to important topics or important topics in history – for instance their Forbidden Library Series. I applaud the fact that Open Road Media publishes a great many books for women that deal with women’s issues. Honestly, I can’t thank them enough for it. I would not have read this book at this time (perhaps ever) without their reissue. Garrow’s book makes a good companion to another Open Road re-Issue – The Search for An Abortionist. (Open Road Media may not be a strictly Feminist Press, but it does seem to be feminist in a great many books).

I purchased this text for an Indepdendent Study course, figuring I could at least flip through the book and gain a summary idea of the case's depths and legal foundation. Although I prided myself on a good grasp of Roe prior to this point, reading the expansive text gave me a greater understanding and appreciation for the case.While this book might be better suited for policy wonks and/or those with some legal training, the substantial read is definently worth it. Even if it is not as animated or lively as other histories of the historic 1973 Supreme Court decision, it is essential to understanding that case in the larger context of constitutional law and public policy. The right to privacy had gradually been building prior to the Roe case, and did not happen in a vaccum as some opponents would later claim.The book concludes with an equally impressive account of the years following Roe and the combined impact of subsequent/rulings and legislation. Because this book does not rely on the "interest groups/grassroots" perspective, individuals in search of such information need to be prepared for further research.

I bought this book not for its material on Roe but actually for research on Griswold. I have to say, it is full of well researched information dating back to about the 1920s debates on the 1879 Connecticut law banning contraceptives. You can't go much further back to the foundations of Roe than this book takes you, but it will be a difficult read. The editor of this book seriously failed at the job. It comes out to about 739 pages of material, minus notes, bibliography and whatnot, but there are only 9 chapters and an epilogue. To make things worse, there are NO HEADINGS ANYWHERE. Garrow jumps from character to character, year to year, and event to event with no clear breaks or organization. If you're looking for an interesting read about Roe, stay away from this book. If you're looking for information about Roe or the right to privacy, this book will probably have it, but be prepared to go through hell to find it.

As roe v. wade continues to be under fire in America, I'm so glad that I read this book to gain a better understanding of our nation's battle over the women's right to choose. It has never been an easy road.

I teach a Bible Study class, most recently we have looked at selecting a scriptural passage pertinent to our petitions and creating a prayer of our own based on the scriptural passage. This particular Concordance is large enough to easily read, complete enough to be helpful and compact enough not to weigh heavily to tote around. I use several different reference books. This one appealed to all the individuals in my class and they purchased copies for themselves. They will use them. I think this is one you should consider buying and using. I also have different age groups in the class and they all liked this one.

I purchased this item for a prisoner in a local jail where I volunteer as a Eucharistic Minister. The prisoner was asking where could he get one so I decided to buy one from him. I did get to speak to him and he said it was exactly what he was looking for. I did not tell him where I purchased it however.

For those who may not know, a concordance is essentially an index for the bible. This is not an exhaustive concordance that lists every word of the bible and where it can be found. Rather it is concise. The decision making is highly competent, and I doubt anyone using this concordance would find it lacking. It is helpful for both scholars and lay people when reading the bible.This is the concordance for the NAB (New American Bible), the most common translation in use for Roman Catholics in the United States. There is also a concise concordance available for the NRSV by the same editor. I have them both. Both are excellent.I would love a good concordance for the RSV (my personal favorite translation), but thus far have been unable to find one. If anyone knows of one, please free to leave a comment letting me know where I can get a good concordance for the RSV.[Added in July 2007]To those who may be interested, I just found a concordance for the RSV that looks good: The Oxford Concise Concordance to the Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible

The print in this book is miniscule! One would have to use a magnifying glass to see the entries, and reading the explanations is impossible. They tried to cram too much into too few pages!

I purchased the hard cover version and upon opening the cover, I hear a somewhat distressing ripping sound - oh the book was pretty much brand new (despite being purchased as a used book) so I had to break it in! Scary, I was afraid I was tearing the book! :)It's very well done. Tight, crisp binding, large enough I don't need to squint at the printing, and appears to have everything I was looking for at the moment (although, as others have mentioned, it is a concise concordance, not an exhaustive.) Basically, like having an abridged dictionary versus having the entire Oxford English Dictionary (the one that's almost bigger than my bed :)Should be quite handy as I do research. BTW, although this book is keyed for NABRE,it can be used with other bible versions (more or less, unless they diverge significantly, such as the Douay-Rheims, perhaps.)Good value for a bible research tool.

Helpful for bible study. But watch out-VERY SMALL PRINT. If you have vision issues look elsewhere. Well made book and durable. Easily carried with standard sized bible.

Just got it in today. Already it helped me in what I was looking for. Being a Catholic edition makes all the difference in the world.

It's better than I expected and foresee using it in religious education program. I would definitely recommend it! Delivery was excellent!
