Politics and Pasta: How I Prosecuted Mobsters, Rebuilt a Dying City, Dined with Sinatra, Spent Five Years in a Federally Funded Gated Community, and Lived to Tell the Tale, by Vincent

From Publishers Weekly

In this intriguing memoir, Cianci details how he became the longest-serving mayor in the history of Providence, R.I. Elected in 1974 as a Republican in an overwhelmingly Democratic city, he held the position until 1984 when he was forced to step down after being convicted of assault. Cianci won the mayoralty again in 1991 and remained in office until a racketeering conviction sent him to prison in 2002. A relentless charmer, Cianci became the public face of Providence's transformation from a shabby northeastern city hemorrhaging jobs and taxpayers to a regional center of tourism and culture. The tone is folksy and occasionally crude, but Cianci's jokes are often at his own expense and a shrewd intelligence shines through; it's easy to understand why he kept getting re-elected. Cianci readily admits to the role luck and money played in his success, and even admits to some major mistakes. More subtly, the former mayor reveals the intricacies of the horse-trading that makes politics go. In places his memoir reads as an extended advertisement for the Providence renaissance, which makes perfect sense: in Cianci's mind, there wasn't much difference between the city and its mayor. 8-page b&w photo insert. Review

A Providence Journal Bestseller"Look up controversial in the dictionary and Buddy Cianci's picture will be there. As he is happy to tell you, he never backed down from a fight or a challenge while rebuilding a great city, and he'll make you laugh while doing it."--Sean Hannity"It's pure Buddy. Beguiling, hilarious, with an excuse -- and a joke -- for everything, Cianci shows why he's one of the most storied figures in modern urban politics. ... It delivers all those things, plus a guided tour of a fascinating political mind."--Politico "Politics and Pasta is a compulsively readable — if not entirely candid — insider's account of city politics by one of the most colorful and longest-serving mayors in memory. And it's written by, as Cianci puts it, perhaps the only person who has ever been inside the White House, Windsor Castle and the federal penitentiary at Fort Dix in New Jersey."--The Associated Press "Cianci tells the fascinating story of his rise to power and the profound transformation that Providence underwent under his command.... As colorful on the page as he is in person, Cianci is a natural storyteller with a lot to say."--Kirkus Reviews "A relentless charmer.... A shrewd intelligence shines through; it's easy to understand why he kept getting re-elected. Cianci readily admits to the role luck and money played in his success, and even admits to some major mistakes. More subtly, the former mayor reveals the intricacies of the horse-trading that makes politics go."--Publishers Weekly "It's an incredible read. I honestly couldn't put it down. Parts of his life read like a movie. You will be amazed at how honest Cianci is at points, and you'll laugh out loud at other points. The guy is candid. He's funny. What else can I say? He's Buddy."--South Coast Today "Cianci is a character, a one-of-kind, bigger than life politican the likes of which I have never met before. I find it difficult to even think of anyone I could come close to comparing him to -- he's that unique."--Norwich Bulletin

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I am a former Rhode Islander. In this book Buddy Cianci tells about how he rebuilt the City of Providence. Some people might thing he is " boasting" and "blowing his own horn" but he is not. I saw this with my own eyes. Downtown Providence was like ghost town before Buddy became major. As a young kid going to college in Providence I would walk downtown. The only thing lacking was some tumbleweeds blowing around. It was sad to say the least. Plus the corruption that went on before he took over was rampant. It made his years as mayor look like romper room. But what happens...., he ends up going to jail. He got screwed, plain and simple. I knew this before reading the book. And then he explains it all in detail. On a lighter note the things that I really enjoyed reading were some of the funny stories he tells about his years as mayor. He is a very funny person and a great story teller. He has a very quick wit and can think extremely quick on his feet. He was also a great speaker. I will never forget the speech he gave at the Columbus Day Feast in Providence weeks after the 9/11 tragedy. Talk about someone who gets knocked down and keeps getting back up....that's Buddy ....he is the ultimate survivor!!!

Really enjoyed this book, and once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. Entertaining and sobering look at Providence civic politics, the challenges facing Buddy, and how he dealt with them, or in some cases, how he was defeated by them. Frustrating and funny at times with lots of great stories. Enough to make me never want to go into politics.

Very interesting and easy to read, very funny at times especially "Buddys" slant on how things really work. He did seems to glorify the sleazy political doings in Providence. I also found that the story line seem to jump around at times and was not always easy to follow the progression from beginning to end. Overall I would recommend this book, even with a few shortcomings. If you are familiar with the city of Providence, you will know the transformation from a pit to the fantastic city it is today. Personally I credit Buddy, right or wrong. I am a visitor to Providence only, I do not live there so this is from an outsiders perspective.

What a character! Buddy has always been a fascinating character. In this book he tells it like it is. Having read " the Prince of Providence " ; I can see that what he recounts is truthful. The first book was written by an editor for the Providence Journal. They were no great fans of Mayor Cianci. To compare the two accounts is amazing. The same story comes through in both books. The biggest mistake that Buddy made was not catering to the powers that wanted politics as usual. We should not forget what this man did for the city of Providence. He turned a rat infested sewer into a tourist attraction. Hats off to you Buddy. As in the "Rascal King " about James Michael Curley; you cared about your constituents more than the people who were seeking gain from political office. In this day and age we need more rogues of this type.

...you will love this book. I lived in Providence in the 90's and was involved with an organization that Buddy helped keep afloat and made a major part of his vision of Providence. The day I moved into Providence you could hardly get anywhere for all of the construction on the river through downtown. The city was dark, dreary and unsafe. The day I moved out of Providence for a new job elsewhere it was a thriving city with a beautiful river, a new downtown and an incredible night life and arts community. Say what you want, he got things done and he tells the story as only Buddy can.

Whether you find humor or disgust in America's local politics, this book will keep your attention. Buddy Cianci had a shot to be president one day........the first Italian-American president in U.S. history..........instead, he wound up in prison. This man is the absolute personification of Rhode Island politics, and for anyone who enjoys stories about the "way things really were" then just about any book about Buddy Cianci is worth reading. This one is no different; read it.

Buddy was the last of the big city Mayors who cared about the city and its people. He is a character, but he got things done and rescued a rapidly dying city and transformed it into a gem. As mentioned in the book any citizen could go up to Buddy and say I am having such and such problem with the city and Buddy would have his aids make a note of it and Buddy would have it taken care of. Few modern pols even make themselves available for a citizen to talk to them. I enjoyed this book. It is great to have an insider's view of running a big city. If I lived in Providence and Buddy was running I would vote for him without reservation.

Never thought I would read a book about Providence, RI. Buddy is a fascinating guy and a wonderful story teller. I heard him on the Dennis Miller show and laughed during the entire interview. The system got him but he is coming back! He defines leadership.
