The late great Jonathan Gold was beloved in LA for his insatiable curiosity about food & culture; he helped us all to explore and find the hidden treasures right under our noses. He would love this book! Lisa's "urban forager" is a curious and adventurous cook -- even a beginner -- who seeks out wonderful local resources -- ingredients, local purveyors, great cooks, etc. -- to experiment with food and culture, and to build community. Her recipes are wonderfully diverse, drawing on the different cultural and culinary traditions of the chefs and cooks she profiles. She encourages us to try new ingredients, substitute this or that, see how the flavor changes. Her book is a how-to for your own urban foraging, no matter where you live!In addition to great, easy-to-follow recipes and fabulous photographs (YES!) , a cookbook really passes muster with me if it is an interesting read. I'm one of those folks who loves to sit down and read cookbooks, filling the page-edges with sticky notes for dishes to try. The "Urban Forager" did not disappoint; I read it cover to cover in two days.What a wonderful addition to the cookbook shelf!
