Although Adam Smith (1723-1790) is known as the "father of economics," I wanted to read this new biography because he is such a major figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. And even though I avoid economics like the plague, I even managed to learn a bit about this discipline as well. The author follows the same pattern of discussion as he did in his bio of Edmund Burke: first, 156 pages of strictly biographical material, and then two further sections on Smith's thought and the impact of his ideas. This is a lot of ground to cover in even a 334 page book, but the author (a Member of Parliament and Ph.D. in economics) pulls it off with only a few problems.The best thing about the intro biographical section is that the author shows how Smith developed some of his key concepts and the context that gave rise to them. So the reader learns about such key concepts as the "impartial spectator," the "invisible hand," and his theory of moral sentiments by reviewing his writings and activities. This is not as true in the second section on Smith's thought which gets into some of his economic theories as well as the development of economic analysis up to the present. Here the reader is hit with concepts like "general equilibrium theory," "the principle of comparative advantage," and diminishing marginal utility, not in conjunction with Smith's own activities but basically as a lesson in economics. I particularly had trouble with this approach in Chapter 7. By contrast Chapter 8 on Smith and markets (really a key concept for Smith) came through much clearer after a second reading. The final two chapters are basically defenses of Smith against the charge that the nasty elements of contemporary capitalism were his doing as a result of "The Wealth of Nations" (1776), which as the author demonstrates is somewhat ridiculous.A lot of the key figures in the Scottish Enlightenment interact with Smith and make appearances: David Hume; Lord Kames; Dr. Cullen; Gershom Carmichael; and Francis Hutcheson to name a few. I found the author's discussion of Smith's "the science of man" quite interesting, as well as his examination of how the tiny and impoverished Scotland of Smith's day gave rise to this enormous and influential intellectual outburst of the Scottish Enlightenment. So the book has much to offer in that it covers the setting of the Enlightenment, delivers an highly insightful biography of Smith, and also examines some important economic concepts related to Smith and their impact. Much meat on these bones to poke through. The analysis is supported by 37 pages of notes, a nice bibliography, an index and a group of interesting illustrations, some in full color. Whether you are interested in economics, or Smith's life, or the Scottish enlightenment, there is much here to engage you.

Lots of snippets about Smith’s life and friends, but very weak discussions about his two seminal works. The author seems to be trying to dismiss Smith rather than focusing on the influence his writings have had and the number of his ideas that still ring true. Don’t read this book. Read Smith in the original. You will get a much better return on your time.

For the non-academic this is an excellent book of introduction on Adam Smith. Throughout the book the author dismisses many of the misunderstandings regarding his natural philosophy and elaborates many of the myths regarding his economic principles and theories. He directly connects correctly his morals and ethics associated with his political economy.

I decided to read Adam Smith after watching Jesse Norman’s impressive presentation on CSPAN’s Book TV. The first half of the book is a straightforward, chronological biography - Smith'’s life, works, and ideas. The remainder is an analysis of Smith’s writings with an emphasis on refuting misconceptions about his ideas on markets and capitalism and an explanation of the moral basis underpinning his thought. The book continues with a discussion of the current distortions and deviations from Smith’s conception of free markets and capitalism. The concluding chapter, Why it Matters, extols the benefits of a healthy commercial society but is also a powerful warning about its creeping subversion by crony capitalism, political dysfunction, rapid technological change, and evolving (decaying) social norms. Timely, scholarly, and readable, this book is highly recommended.

Marcella Wells is President of Wells Resources, Inc. a woman-owned, small business that specializes in interpretive planning, visitor studies, and project management. Founded in 2000, Wells Resources works with federal, state, and local land management agencies, informal learning settings (museums, nature centers, arboreta, etc.) and non-profit organizations as an advocate for visitors an informal learning. Before founding the company, Marcella was a faculty member in the College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University where she mentored graduate students and taught several courses in interpretation, interpretive planning, environmental education, and leisure studies. She is past Vice President of the Visitors Studies Association, current member of AAMÂ’s Education Committee (EdCom), and Steering Committee member for the Children and Nature Connection in Fort Collins, Colorado. MarcellaÂ’s recent clients include the National Park Service, Adirondack Museum, Bureau of Reclamation, Colorado State Parks, Denver Museum of Natural History, National Park Service, royal British Columbia Museums, Walking Mountain Science Center, and numerous other public, private and non-profit organizations. In 2012, Marcella was awarded the Enos Mills Lifetime Achievement Award for the Colorado Alliance for Environment Education.Dr. Barbara ButlerÂ’s academic credentials include a BA in biology from Millikin University, Decatur, IL; an MA in anthropology from the State University of New York at Buffalo; and a Ph. D. in anthropology from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Barbara taught at North Texas State University, Denton, TX and the University of Delaware, Newark, DE before becoming the director of the Delaware Museum of Natural History. In 1990, she joined the staff of the Informal Science Education program at the National Science Foundation as program director of Informal Science Education and section head of the Science Literacy Section. Her tenure there was 10 years. Barbara has been active in Visitor Studies Association since the early 1990Â’s, serving two terms on the board, chair of the Albuquerque annual meeting local arrangements committee, and as chair of the VSA professional development committee.

Since retirement she has consulted with a number of informal learning organizations including the Japanese Friendship Garden, San Diego, CA; Biodiversity Project, Madison, WI; Chicago Botanic Garden, Chicago, IL; The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Garden, Pasadena, CA; and the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta, Wilmington, DE, among others. She also serves on the board for the Placitas Artists Series, a local organization that provides chamber music, visual art, and a school outreach program in southern Sandoval County, New Mexico.Judith M. Koke is the Richard and Elizabeth Currie Chief, Public Programming and Learning at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Previously she was the Director, Education and Interpretive Programs at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Koke served as an instructor for the University of Toronto’s “Museum Interpretation and Meaning-making” class in 2010 and 2011, and as an instructor in “Visitor Research and Evaluation” at George Washington University in Washington D.C. She was previously a Senior Researcher for the Institute for Learning Innovation, where she did a nationwide study of all IMLS-funded youth programs. She was also the evaluator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for seven years, where she managed visitor studies and evaluation.

Although the work is a lifetime in the making, for the last several years believers have known that this volume was coming forth and so they eagerly looked for it. Today it is here.At 1024 pages and weighing in at 4.3 pounds, it finds itself in the heavyweight class of systematic theologies (with the likes of books by John Frame and Norman Geisler). Of course, sheer size conveys nothing about the content. The content in many ways is not surprising. The volume is laid out like many other systematic theologies with 10 chapters covering the following: 1. Prolegomena 2. Bibliology 3. Theology Proper 4. Christology 5. Pneumatology 6. Anthropology & Harmartiology 7. Soteriology 8. Angelology 9. Ecclesiology 10. EschatologyWhile laid out in similar formats, each systematic theology comes with own emphasis and style in a manner that convey points that may not be covered by others. At the beginning of the book, the editors lay out several distinctives that they follow over the course of their presentation. First is that they presuppose the existence of God. Biblical Doctrine is not a book appealing to unbelievers by trying to prove that God exists, but instead presupposes this point in order to present God's truth. Second is that the hermeneutics employed utilize five principles: literal, historical, grammatical, synthetical, and clarity. With that in mind, readers can embark on a journey through systematic theology that will be challenging to one's worldview, delve deep into the Scriptures, and cause significant pondering on the things of God.Beneficial AttributesThe profundity found within Biblical Doctrine is substantial and even reading through the introductory material of chapter one will force a person to contemplate how the truth impacts all aspects of a person's life. There are four primary characteristics that readers will benefit from: * Comprehensive: While no systematic theology book can cover every aspect of theology, some can certainly be more comprehensive than others. Certainly this is one of the comprehensive ones, not only teaching theology but at times goes in great depth where others stick to the basics (just look at the section on God's names, which explains far more detail than most of us have ever been taught), reviews alternate views on select topics (whether Christian or secular), and even shares a wide breadth of quotations and thoughts from previous theologians. * Concise: While long and comprehensive, the authors and editors have sought to convey the information by only covering what is absolutely necessary and avoids rabbit trails. Thus readers are well-informed without being inundated. * Clear: Readers will also appreciate the authors clarity in writing. The topics are complex, however they don't have to be difficult to understand. There is great care in using language that is not overbearing and when biblical terms are used (that some find confusing) they are well-defined both in the text and in the basic glossary. * Constructive: Unfortunately there is often a great disconnect between theology and application. One of the aspects of this book that I found myself really appreciating was the ability to weave in points and descriptions of how theology is lived out. It is not as though the authors are tacking on this information at the very end, as we often hear in sermons, but instead are subtly reminding readers throughout about the importance of biblical doctrine for the Christian life.Adverse AttributesMy one lament with this book is the writing itself. While concise and clear, at times it is very weak writing, using phrases that have little impact upon the depth of what is being conveyed. This can be noted by the repeated use of the phrase 'it is' which is often the first sign of weak writing. I know this is a minor point when we consider what this volume is and what it conveys, but nonetheless it is an area that the authors and editors could have improved upon slightly.Theological AttributesUnder normal circumstances a book critique includes thoughts about the theology in an evaluative form, however, this is a unique situation because the whole book is about theology. As a result, I have chosen to deal with the theology of the book in a different way. I recognize that not everyone shares the same theological leanings of Drs. John MacArthur and Richard Mayhue and that may impact one's desire to utilize this book. Admittedly I studied at The Master's University (so know that as I review this book) but even I do not agree with every detail of the theology.However, know this: the book is extremely solid and well-reasoned. While there are some areas that there may be disagreement, on the major issues of the Christian life the information provided here are generally solid and standard for those who have a high authority of the Bible in their life.Even on points that you may disagree the editors have done well and ensuring their position is backed up with Scripture and thus compelling you to define and defend your own position with the same level of detail as well. In other words, even when you disagree there are great points in reading the book because it compels you to think about why you believe what you believe.Going into the book, here are the distinctives of the book that most people will want to know and find themselves most considered about: * Scripture's Center: The center of Scripture has long been debated and the editors here have declared that they see the King and Kingdom as the primary center. * Purpose of Salvation: While many consider the purpose of salvation to be to rescue fallen men (man-centric) the doctrine of salvation presented here is from the viewpoint that the purpose is to glorify God (God-centric). * Calvinism: Most people recognize that John MacArthur is identified with Calvinism and the doctrines of grace do impact the book. In particular there are sections on election and particular redemption. * Pretribulational, Premillennial: While presenting varying views of eschatology, the primary emphasis of doctrine presented in the book is from a pretribulational, premillennial view. * Israel & the Church: The book treats Israel and the Church as separate entities.Many people find it important to understand the perspective that are being presented and these points in particular are helpful to that understanding. However, I would urge one caution to readers. If you disagree with even a portion of the points presented here, do not let that stop you from purchasing and reading through the book. By simply avoiding the book you will miss a tremendous opportunity of being blessed by the knowledge and wisdom of scholars well-versed in ministry and life.Unique AttributesFinally, Biblical Doctrine differentiates itself in some unexpected ways that add great value to the book. First, spread throughout the book are hymns. Hymns are slowly falling to the side, yet here they have allowed them to play a role in speaking to the readers. The use of hymns allows readers to see once again connection between faith, doctrine, and application. It also develops an appreciation for the hymns that is lacking.Related to the hymns are the closing prayers of each section. The editors have chosen the written prayers of various godly men throughout church history and included them within this edition. These prayers force readers to see not only some great examples of prayer but also to fixate upon the Lord.These attributes are small in terms of inclusion into the book, but the effect is well-noted. Attention to such details should cause readers to grow in their appreciation of this volume.Biblical Doctrine is a profound systematic theology that is sure to stand apart from the many others that are out there. Solidly Biblical. This is a great one-volume reference.While systematic in approach, this is not what is commonly referred to as a "Systematic Theology" reference as has been mentioned by others. The common understanding of books titled "Systematic Theology" is that they present more than one way to view each topic with the justification used in each case. The presentation can vary in perceived balance by each reader's inclination. Since the topics are often highly technical and complex the reference work becomes either many-volumed or very limited in some way. This work's title does not even claim the be a Systematic Theology, so I don't understand what the problem is.In the limited reading I have done so far in this work, I appreciate the depth with which each topic is treated in a one-volume work. I do not miss the presentation of other viewpoints since other viewpoints are often causal to why I am reading a work like this anyway. I value the consistent, clear, Biblical understanding and defense this work offers.

This is a resource that every believer should invest in and cherish. The theological truths are presented in a way that will nourish new believers and further instruct the more mature saints.

Joseph V. Tingley is an economic geologist with the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology in Reno. Over the past 40 years, he has examined prospects, mines, and mining campus throughout Nevada and the Great Basin. Kris Ann Pizarro is a cartographer and technical illustrator with the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. "Close enough for government work" is a slam with a core message that is demolished by Tingley and Pizarro's book. The inside cover makes it clear that this book, published by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, is keyed to the designation by the Nevada Legislature of US 50 as the official "Loneliest Road." Thus forwarned to what by conventional wisdom ought to be a badly-organized piece of legislation-inspired junk, I was blown out of the water (OK, sand) by the photos (plenty of color but also outstanding B&W), organization, and clear and enthusiastic writing. The emphasis is on geology over social history, but the interaction between the two is always made clear. And it's not just history--wise comments re the possible sound of Sand Mountain versus the reality of OHV roaring alert readers to what is worth stopping for. Anyone traveling through Nevada on US 50 as opposed to I-80 or I-15 must be a tourist. This book gets granular for you.

This is a must have for those planning a trip across the loneliest road in America. My son & I used this book to help us find some fantastic places to camp, during our month long trip across Nevada. This book has great information on some little known history of highway 50.

Driving through Nevada can be a speedy trip just to get to the other side or a leisurely, exploration using this book. Frequent stops to chat with towns people, picnic in city parks, learn about silver mining or see a night sky filled with stars.

What a great road trip companion. Gonna be hitting highway 50 multiple times this year and look forward to this wonderful resource.

This guide is so much fun! We always take it with us when we travel highway 50.

I live in western Nevada and have had the opportunity to travel this road many times on my exploration of the state. This book is the best one that you will find that goes into great detail about the geology, history, and sights along Highway 50. It's very professionally done and goes into great detail. It's fascinating to read it even if you haven't travelled it. (I had the unique opportunity last year to do this trip on a bicycle over a period of a week. That REALLY allows you to see things you would miss in a car.) Many people just want to drive through Nevada as quickly as possible getting to California or other destinations. That's too bad because they miss a lot of very interesting western history. Nevada is the state with the largest number of mountain ranges in the US. When you travel east/west across the state, you have to go over them. These large changes in elevation gives rise to the wide diversity of plants and animals that are associated with these various zones. All you have to do is just go off the main roads down some of the valleys and you will find many old shost townss--see Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps and Stan Paher's "Nevada Ghost Towns and Desert Atlas", Vol. 1 Northern Nevada--hot springs, aspen groves, and idyllic camping spots by a stream with very few people. It is truely "The Big Empty", where one can find many unique individuals . (A good companion book along these lines is "Passing Through" by Richard Menzies.) There are still many ranchers that live in these valleys. It takes a certain kind of person to make a go of it under these remote conditions. This book is a great guide to what is available along Highway 50 and I can't recommend it enough.

I have a confession to make. When I live in a place that has ice and snow on the ground for twenty-something days; the temperature hovers around the cold mark (anything below 50 degrees Fahrenheit;)and my home heating bills are larger than my mortage payment, I frequently contract cabin fever. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, looking at maps, howling at the moon (when available), chasing parked cars, and reading travel books. I know, I know, it's only the beginning of winter and readers are typically not standing in line to get tickets for their summer vacations. However, to my surprise I find that a number of libraries have very popular travel programs that start in January. Could it be that others are afflicted with this seemingly incurable malaise? Thus, you can imagine my delight in finding a copy of this wonderful travel book. My wife and I traveled U.S. Highway 50, christened "The Loneliest Road in America" by Time magazine, across Nevada a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, while we had a number of obligatory travel books of this region, this one was not available. I can't believe how much we missed! Since it was published by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, it is a specialized travel book. But don't let that fool you. While it is chock full of information on the geology, flora, and fauna of the region it is so much more. In addition to being highly readable it has 70 color photos, 170 black & white photos and an abundance of illustrations, maps, and sketches. The book takes the traveler along this historic Lincoln Highway from Carson City to Baker and introduces you to a unique Nevada adventure complete with national forests, deserts, and a National Park, Great Basin, that many travelers don't even know exists. About the only thing you will miss is the diesel fume spewing monsters pulling full grown homes and bumper-to-bumper traffic at every milepost. During our visit to Great Basin National Park we encountered perhaps a dozen cars. The book has a helpful road log keyed to highway markers. The trip will take you from ghost towns to Pony Express stations and so many side trips into areas of pristine beauty that you will be hard pressed to believe you are in Nevada, which is, after all just a lot of desert, right? You might even visit a lake that produces some of the best trout fishing in the State and stop for a picnic lunch under aspens that will take your breath away. How about stopping in Fallon and visiting the Naval Air Station and Strike and Air Warfare Center, the Navy's Top Gun training center. Riding the "Ghost Train" from Ely is a trip you won't forget. We discovered the works of Nevada poet Kirk Robertson in a small bookshop in Eureka, which has a beaufifully restored historic courthouse. Kind of a special two for one deal. If you are looking for the fastest way to traverse Nevada complete with four lanes of pavement, interchanges, and fast food stops, Highway 50 is not for you. On the other hand, if you have just a touch of adventure in your soul and don't mind beautiful scenery, historic ambiance, and lots of space, this is worth your time. I would not make this the only travel guide to take on such a trip but I would not leave home without it. Take heart fellow sufferers, spring and summer is coming and this book will remind you why the wait is worth it.
