If you have ever had a teacher who made a lifelong difference in your child you might understand my love for Debbie Sims. She was my daughter's kindergarten teacher and I have never even heard of a kindergarten teacher who handled her class so wisely, innovatively and covered the basics so well. When I heard that her husband wrote a book, I had to buy it, if only to support the man she loved. Wow, Now I know why she loves him (and he her.) He went to a small nation on a Fulbright scholarship and rather than using it to improve his own credentials back home, he spent every day trying to be a good ambassador for the USA and Texas. His efforts did not always cross cultures well and the humor was always on himself, never making anyone else the butt of his jokes. He worked at this every day and the Latvians watched with jaws dropped until they figured out that he was real and then they entered into his world as he entered into theirs. I laughed so often and came to love this fine, fine man. He missed his wife terribly and she missed him. He may just be fine enough to deserve her.

You get to follow an interesting Texan through roughly six months visiting an interesting country. One encounters unfamiliar culture, humorous misunderstandings, and boundless goodwill. Delightful quick read. Worthwhile and enjoyable even if you have no special interest in Latvia. Never was such an admirable and lovable author. The adaptability, hard work, and perseverance in difficult circumstances shown by Dale Sims is America at its best and most characteristic.

A very touching and insightful memoir. I am going to Latvia in two weeks and read the book as preparation for understanding the cultural differences that I may encounter. The author's engaging style and enthusiasm for his subject made it an enjoyable and informative read.

The book is a very nice read and quite humorous. Dr. Sims makes you realize that we all leave some kind of an impression when we visit other countries. He went a long way to try and remove the "ugly American" image that Latvia and so many other countries have about those of us from the USA.

A perfectly delightful book written by a DBU colleague. I could not put it down until it was finished. Dale took me to laughter and tears.

This delightful little book features just about all of the recognizable characters from all six "Star Wars" movies, including droids, creatures, and certain groups (like the Gamorrean Guards, Stormtroopers and X-Wing Pilots, for example). Even characters who I recognized but didn't even know the name of are featured.Of course a few appear more than once, where their identity changed (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, etc.). About the only omission are the individual Podracers, who (aside from the dastardly Sebulba) are all featured on one page. And some entries are on pages with a black, rather than white, background (and not necessarily signifying evil vs. good), which makes them a bit harder to read.No matter; this is an indispensable reference to "Star Wars" fans, young and old. But it only applies to the six movies of the saga; characters from "Clone Wars" are featured in their own book, and characters from the "extended Universe" are not here, either. But if you want to know more about General Grievous, Sy Snootles or Zam Wesell, they're all in here!

My 11 year old daughter had seen a boy with this at school and decided she wanted to get it for her 6 year old little brother for Christmas because it looked so good. He loved it, but I also enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane. It is a nice hard bound book that contains over 200 characters. Each character gets a full color page devoted to them with essential information, cross-references to other characters, and little known tidbits.. All your favorites are there as well as all the favorites you've forgotten ever existed- R2D5 anyone? Every human, creature, or droid that makes an appearance in Episodes I-VI are represented here. Just note that this was published before "The Force Awakens" so those characters are not in it. Any Star Wars fan, young or old, will enjoy this.

Has all of the characters except the new one. hard cover and pages do not feel cheap. Good buy. I got this as a gift for my lil bro who just loves the franchise. Once we started looking inside of it we noticed that we were able to sort of rediscover certain characters and even find out stuff about other characters that we did not know about. I cannot spoil anything so I wont lol. Some of the characters in this encyclopedia were not even noticeable until we watched the movies again and paused at certain scenes. Really a great book if you want to know all about the characters and where they come from as well as weapons used or even for drawing characters. This gives you a good up close and personal feel.

Being a fan of DK Publishing, their format is perfectly suited to this book's subject. DK publications are of very high quality visual orientation, whether photographs, illustrations, diagrams, instructions. This book has good quality color photos of the characters with descriptions and details. Purchased as a gift for young Star Wars fans and they will likely be very pleased. As the purchaser, I was pleased with the quality and comprehensive coverage of the subject. I'm not a Star Wars expert but it looks like it will please those who are!

My daughter loves all things Star Wars. She saw this book and asked for it for her birthday. It encourages reading and thinking and it teaches her more about the characters than just watching the movies. She has started learning more facts about each of the characters she doesn't know well, and has also been quoting them.I like that it's printed on high-quality paper and is hard covered. It makes it more durable when her little sisters want to read it. I like that it includes most of the Star Wars characters and gives both information about the character as well as a "data file"about them. Some of the main pictures of each characters are blurry, but that could be for different reasons.This is a good book for any Star Wars lover, young or old. I have flipped through it to remind myself of some of the characters.

There were a lot of characters that my boyfriend's family (who have been Star Wars buff since they were kids) did not know.CONs:1. The front cover of my book had light scratches on it. It was obvious the book hadn't been opened or read and the recipient didn't notice it until I pointed it out, but it bothered me.Overall:Cute gift for someone who likes Star Wars. I bought this for my five-year-old nephew who is just getting into Star Wars. He has seen the movies, watches some of the cartoons, and is starting a collection of toys. And I have been a fan for over 30 years. There are a few things that make this just perfect for a kid:1. Its size. It's small enough for him to handle comfortably.2. Very sturdy. Like most kids his age, he is less than gentle with his belongings, and the book has held up well.3. Layout. The large character pictures grab his attention, and he is encouraged to read through the copious amounts of information to learn about the characters.

I know nothing about Star Wars, it just isn't my thing. However, my older nephew has recently become Star-Wars obsessed. For Christmas, I loaded up on Star Wars-themed gifts, and this was one of them. I guess it must be a good book because his father (also a Star Wars fan) immediately became engrossed in it. My nephew might be a tad bit too young for this book on his own, but I have no doubt that his dad will lead the way. It was an excellent Christmas gift at an excellent price!

This book focuses on the properties of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. It is a companion to the ASM Metals Handbook Desk Edition and the complete 20-plus volumes of the ASM Handbook. It differs from the desk edition and complete set of handbooks in that it focuses almost entirely on data and does not contain the additional information on other topics, such as casting or joining. It also does not contain the background sections, which discuss some of the metallurgy behind the data that is provided. This is a thinner book than the Metals Handbook Desk Edition (614 pager versus 1521 pages), but it is only a little less expensive ($192 versus $262). If you can afford it, I would buy the ASM Metals Handbook Desk Edition (I have both). The Desk Edition is, in my opinion, well worth the additional $70.

Great material enclosed, and one of the books used to compile the CRC Book. Great value buy when its priced right.
