I spent my summers canoe tripping in Algonquin, where I experienced the "real" facts of life. The most important and lasting is that misfortune outdoors can be overcome--that being wet, cold and miserable is only a temporary condition. with better weather ahead. In Vietnam during the Tet '68 offensive, my battalion was surrounded by the North Vietnamese bent on killing us. I reminded the few survivors that I felt that i was feeling the same way during some wilderness canoe tripping that cost my parents big bucks. The difference, I explained, was that we were being payed by the government for having so much fun.Charles Krohn, author: The Lost Battalion of Tet

Fantastic book. Every canoeist should own this book, then again so should every Canadian. MacGregor melds this national pastime with the nation it helped create. Great insight into history while not loosing the passion of the paddle. Magnificent read.

very good

Great book. Full of stories that relate to the history of canoeing in Canada.

It was a gift The recipient loved it

For the writer whose grandparents were Algonquin Park rangers and lived on an island in the park this book is a personal labour of love. The book encompasses the history of canoe travel, its lore, philosophy, versatility. The men who explored Canada by canoe, the men who built them, the tourists who played in them. To think that dissatisfied with the freighter canoe in which he was traveling David Thompson paused and built two smaller canoes from scratch with nothing more than a hatchet and a blade. Birch bark and spruce pitch have given way to cedar strip, canvas, aluminum, Fiberglas, Royalex, and Kevlar.

So, I read three books this summer in really quick succession.well, I should qualify that, I read two books in really quick succession, and then tried to read a third one.the third one was Canoe Country.the first two were The Road to Wigan Pier, and The Inconvenient Indian.these first two I gave 4 stars to both, check out my amazon.com reviews.Canoe Country, well, I got stalled on the introduction.the author told a story, dragged out over 20 or so pages, that should have been told in a page or two.I never made it to the end of the intro.so then I thought, let’s jump ahead to some meat.what did I find? some triviality about Pierre Trudeau saving canoeing.Really? I’ve been canoeing my whole life, and so have my friends.I asked them if Trudeau had saved canoeing, and they didn’t know what I was talking about. Is the author a card-carrying Liberal? I don’t know.Final verdict? A long-winded book about a bunch of trivialities strung end-to-end.Skip this one, unless you’re a card-carrying Liberal.
