Many people inside the pharmacy world realize, to put it mildly, that it is extremely challenging to be a pharmacist. There are so many things that will wear down pharmacists and make them feel like they can’t make a difference anymore. Furthermore, the stress placed on today’s pharmacists in an already hyper-competitive environment makes it difficult to have an emotional (and physical) well being. Alex Barker’s “Indispensable” addresses what is wrong with the pharmacy profession today and what you can do to have an opportunity at a fulfilling, meaningful, dignified career that you get up looking forward to. With the empathy of a pharmacist (after all he is a PharmD), Alex will take you through some thought processes, self examinations and exercises to find out what truly mortivates you, what you are passionate about so you can turn it into a career. He also has a link to resources that can help you along the path to your goals. The best part is that all of this is consdensed into a light read that any pharmacist can make the time for. I highly recommend it!D. Todd Traylor, PharmD

I just finished reading the book! It was a quick read and I liked how you explained the concepts with examples. It got me thinking of where and what I want to do because I’m at a transitional phase in my career. I know I want to experience Pharma industry and the later part of the book is making think of how I am going to achieve that. I will have to go back and write some of the questions and honestly answer them or find answers to. Honestly the hardest part for me finding my passion or what I am good at. I was happy and content (that a great relationship with patients and my staff) in my previous job but was getting an underlying itch to try something different. I am now looking into possibilities that would fit my personality. But enough about of it impacted me. I think this a great start of someone who is looking for a new start or someone wanting to bring purpose to their lives. The practical questions you ask the reader to think about gets one thinking. Am I happy doing what I do? Could I be happier doing something else?Definitely think it’s a wonderful start for someone who is lost in their pharmacy career ( as many of us do get handcuffed to the salary because of our lifestyles).

This book is quite unique. It’s a crucial read for any pharmacist who is thinking about their future in terms of the rapidly changing profession of pharmacy (and also happens to be applicable to any profession). I am a Community Pharmacist (still at heart) who made the change out of that specialty into another one (Informatics Pharmacy) a few years ago. What I found fascinating about this book is how the author so accurately describes the key decisions, challenges and mindset that are so important to understand if you are contemplating a switch.Alex puts into words almost all of the thoughts and experiences I had in my career change and I appreciate both the realistic and optimistic tone of the book. I think one of my favorite chapters is his description of Ikigai, which I had never heard of but found perfectly summarizes how I decided on (and why I love) my new job. I found it (and the rest of the book) to be the perfect explanation of how to start thinking about a path forward for anyone who feels stuck. This book is basically a philosophy and road map to a rewarding career. Highly recommended if you’ve ever wondered about a career change or shift.

Alex writes a concise, and relevant book, with easy to follow steps that help pharmacists improve their current job situation. The tips on how to evaluate strengths, and use them to increase job satisfaction, were most valuable to me. I think everyone could use some advice to inspire improvement in their careers. I also enjoyed Alex's advice on career transition, it's a brave thing to move out of a career that took so much time and effort to get in to.There are a few typos, but they don't interfere with the overall message. Definitely worth a read for the burnt-out pharmacist. If you are a spouse, friend, good acquaintance of a stressed pharmacist, get them this book.

As a pharmacist who recently has dipped their toe into the world of self development, I was astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge Alex provides. This is an author with an established track record of coaching pharmacists into fulfilling careers they love, and maybe more importantly, be proud of at the end of the day. In Indispensable, he lays out simple and actionable steps for cultivating a more fulfilling career. Based on my own reading in self development, it's clear that Alex has made himself an expert by immersing himself in the knowledge from a wide variety of the leaders in personal growth, business, and personal finance. This book had my mind racing at the possibilities available to pharmacists to not only create the careers they love, but to actually help make a change for the better in healthcare. It was hard to put down because each page brought realistic excitement about creating my own path. Needless to say (but, hey, I am saying it anyways), this book truly has inspired me, and I am willing to bet it will inspire thousands more pharmacists. Kudos to Alex on what was clearly a labor of love, passion, and a heckuva lot of hard work.If you are a pharmacist unhappy where you are, wondering what your next step is, or just looking to blend your profession and passion, read Indispensable.

Alex’s advice is truly indispensable. It’s not easy to get out of a job that pays well but is absolutely miserable and Alex will teach you unique techniques to find your true passion within pharmacy and decide what you want to do. It’s not the same old advice- this is new and very helpful!! If you are thinking of changing your direction in pharmacy, this book is a must-read!
