About the Author
Growing up gay in Chugiak, Alaska, Doug Reynolds is intimately aware of the specific challenges facing LGBTQ+ kids in the 21st century. He started writing children's books in 2016 in an effort to create visible, affirming representations of minority children who are so often overlooked by mainstream media. After a very successful Kickstarter, Doug published his first book, A Normal Turtle: An LGBTQ Kid s Book with Mascot Books in the fall of 2017. He loves camping, cooking, theatre, and hiking all around the Pacific Northwest. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his boxer-ridgeback, Harper.

I can't begin to say enough good things about this lovely children's book. I bought this book for my nephew, and I'm recommending it to all of my friends and family with small children. The clever and adorable story of Kit, a fox who accidentally stumbles into a life as a turtle, demonstrates what it means to be true to yourself, to love yourself and to celebrate those things that make us all unique. It's a beautiful story of inclusion and acceptance told through witty rhyme and colorful, fun illustrations! It's the type of lesson story-telling that all of our kids need now more than ever.
I bought this for my wife, she’s basically crying because it’s so cute. When we’re able to have our first child we really wanna be able to share positive stories- and this is one of them! Everyone deserves a good story and I’m happy this book is around for this!It’s also SO cute and encouraging!
I can’t say enough about this book! It is an absolutely beautiful story about loving yourself no matter what. Being a two mom family, books like this one mean so much to me, my wife and our young sons.

This was a really cute book. My kids enjoyed it a lot
Though I pre-ordered this book directly from the author's project page, I wanted to review it here, as I am set to buy another copy. As a transgender person, this story spoke to me... and I wanted to share it with my young nephew. He is still not quite ready to understand the deeper meanings behind it, but I have taken the time to select books carefully for him -- ones that not only include diversity, but celebrate it and help youth understand the world they share equally with those unlike them. The author, Mr. Reynolds, has several more projects in the works (as I understand it), and at this point, I plan to consider anything he publishes as long as he is able to maintain this high level of quality.
A Normal Turtle by Doug Reynolds tells the story of how a fox became a turtle. Not ever feeling right in his shell, the fox broke out one day to live his true identity. While written with a focus on LGBTQ children, the author’s message is one which will resonate with any child, and parents, who society deems different. It simply was an astounding story illustrated with beautiful drawings. Thank you, Doug, for writing such a clear story that depicts love and acceptance all children can relate to. There is no parent to whom I would not hesitate to recommend this book.
This is a wonderful story about bravery, staying true to yourself, and accepting others. It teaches an important lesson every child should learn: love and acceptance of people who are different from them. It also shows any child that feels different than "normal" that they are just right the way they are, and that there are people who love and accept them. My children have this book, we've given it as a gift several times, and plan on giving it in the future, as well as recommending it to everyone I know. I cannot say enough good things about this book!
