I have long admired the photograph of the woman with her children revealing the impact of the Great Depression on the poor. This image invokes such emotion and sympathy. Never knowing who snapped the image recording it for thousands to see, it was a privilege to learn a bit about the individual responsible.In this children's book the unusual life of Dorothea Lange is briefly told from her history of crippling polio to her traveling across the United States capturing images of the people and their hardships and emotions. As the author states... "she was a storyteller with a camera."The uncorrected proof I received, showed the illustrations in basic neutrals with only touches of color. The figures are basic and look somewhat abstract in form. This is in keeping with the bleak, bare story Dorothea Lange captured in her photography.A children's book, this is a good introduction to how capturing the faces and emotions with a camera can benefit generations to come and tell the story.DISCLOSURE: I received an uncorrected proof to facilitate a review. I really enjoyed this Christian historical romance. It takes place in 1910. Nora has received money from her fiancee to come to America from Norway. However, when she arrives in a small North Dakota town, things don't work out as anticipated. She knows she needs to find a job so she can save for her passage back to Norway. The only job she can find is being a nanny/housekeeper for Carl who has just lost his wife. However, she really can't do that because an unmarried woman must not live with a man. Although the story is predictable, I enjoyed reading the novel and appreciated that there was no sex, no swearing, and the characters had Christian values.

I love this author I read all her books. Love the Dakota series, As always I never want to get to the end of the book because her books are so well written. I am on my 30th book of Lauraine Snelling . You will not be disappointed in her books.

An excellently written story, as all Lauraine Smelling books are. A story of failed expectations, unexpected resolution, change of hearts and circumstances all wrapped in praise and thanksgiving for God's amazing Grace.

Love this book! So glad that it is the first of a series! I love Lauraine Snelling's way of writing!! The way she describes each character, it's like I know them personally!! The only thing I don't like is that her books are much too short!! Thank you Lauraine Snelling for many nights of late reading!!

I just finished reading the third book of the Dakota Series. Dakota Dawn begins with the young lady arriving from Norway with unexpected events to follow. You can actually feel her fears and doubts due to Lauraine Snelling's fine style of writing! Each character is vividly introduced and followed and one can actually feel acquainted with the person! This series of books is shorter than most of Ms Snelling's books, but with all three books it is possible to include sufficient details. If you enjoy historical fiction this is a must read - and another treasure from Lauraine Snelling!

I am almost finished with the last of the Dakota Series. They are inspiring, and intellectually stimulating. Lauraine Snelling is a first rate writer, even if a little predictable, when one has read as many of her books as we have. For example, the main character of the book rubs the cramps out of her lower back with balled up fists. Overall, I would rate these books as the top of the Line in Christian Fiction.

I was a little disappointed in how short this book was. It ended too soon. The story line was predictable but charming. I'm going to read the second one in the Dakota series because I have always liked Lauraine Snelling's books. My favorites are of course the Red River series.

Everything this author writes is amazing. Historical Christian fiction that is hard to put down. Characters are so well developed and the faith they live Day by day is truly inspiring.

If you're traveling the Rhine this book is a must have.

Vintage publication, but the castles haven't changed much in the past 100 years... Great reference with interesting tidbits about several of the many castles along the Rhine river in Germany. A worthy read.

While this book is not a colorful coffee table book,it is a nice small guide to castles along the Rhine river in Germany.The text gives just a tease and the pictures are black and white so I would not buy this if you are looking for an oversized book of bright beautiful pictures or in depth information. But I find it a nice guide filled with just enough info that I didn't know before reading it.

More telling is Johanna Schopenhauer, the philosopher's Mutter, who wrote in 1816, "Imagine, in addition to the sublime splendour of natural beauty, the many picturesque ruins of old castles gazing sternly down from rocky eminences into the valley. I got my pre-ordered copy on Thursday and actually bought a second copy today for my nephews. This book is so imaginative and thoughtful, I want to buy a copy for every young child in my life. It's an alphabet book and DIY book all in one (the animals are made cleverly of things found around the house!). It prompts really great dialogue with kiddos -- "what's that animal?" "what's the animal made of?" "why would little t be afraid of the zoo?" It's really very good.

My two year old loves this book, we have to read it over and over. We think it is ok but sone of the animals chosen in the alphabet could have been easier

I wasn't sure if an alphabet book would still interest my 5 year old nephew, but I read the book when it arrived today and it's just perfect for him. I'm looking forward to reading it together and watching him try and figure out each animal.I love this unique take on a classic picture book theme.

This book is a great family adventure when it comes to helping sister discover her fear of the zoo. Adorable illustrations to tackle the problem. Preschoolers will love this book with the little surprise at the end.

I love this book. The illustrations are hilarious and clever, and the story is engaging and fun throughout. I've already bought it for my godson and for my best friend's kids. What I love about the book is the spirit of play and creativity on every page. In a time of iphones, we need more books like this!

wonderful book

This is a very inspirational book. Kids and adults alike will love the incredible animal creations and the clever illustrations. What I love most about this book is that it teaches kids how to turn the ordinary into extraordinary. Given how device-heavy childhood has become, this book is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best fun comes from a cardboard box, some tape, and a little imagination.
