Dorothea Lange: The Photographer Who Found the Faces of the Depression

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Dorothea Lange saw the human misery of the Depression and photographed it, helping to bring aid to those in need. Though polio left her with a limping gait, it did not keep this remarkable woman from making a difference in the world and using her insight to tell stories with her camera. The subjects she chose—sharecroppers in the South, migrant workers in the West, and, later, Japanese Americans in internment camps—faced poverty and injustice. In condensing her life for this simple picture book introduction for young readers and listeners, Weatherford and Green have sadly flattened it. Without background, the intended audience is unlikely to recognize how extraordinary Lange was, especially as a woman working professionally in her time, as an advocate for social justice, and as an artist. Swiftly summarizing events in smoothly written prose, the author ends with Lange's encounter with Florence Owens Thompson, the migrant mother of her iconic photograph. The digitally painted illustrations have a 1930s look, but the grayscale images of a few of Lange's famous photographs lack the emotion of the originals. (There are three small reproductions in the back matter.) VERDICT For a younger audience than that of Barb Rosenstock's Dorothea's Eyes: Dorothea Lange Photographs the Truth, this might provide a bridge but is not a necessary purchase.—Kathleen Isaacs, Children's Literature Specialist, Pasadena, MD

"A well-researched and inviting introduction to a woman whose important, compassionate art captured the nation’s attention." —Booklist"Weatherford writes eloquently of Lange’s creative drive and compassion . . . Lange was not only an artist driven to make art but an activist whose images generated awareness of suffering and injustice." —Publishers Weekly

Perfection! The illustrations work with the text in sophisticated ways! The craft behind the text and the craft behind the art are great studies how to create a perfect picture book biography. One of my all-time favorites!

Great book for my niece, Made a great gift.

Beautiful illustrations! Inspiring story for young women!

Not what I thought. I sent it back. Did you give me my money back? I am unsure but think no ???

I have long admired the photograph of the woman with her children revealing the impact of the Great Depression on the poor. This image invokes such emotion and sympathy. Never knowing who snapped the image recording it for thousands to see, it was a privilege to learn a bit about the individual responsible. In this children's book the unusual life of Dorothea Lange is briefly told from her history of crippling polio to her traveling across the United States capturing images of the people and their hardships and emotions. As the author states... "she was a storyteller with a camera."The uncorrected proof I received, showed the illustrations in basic neutrals with only touches of color. The figures are basic and look somewhat abstract in form. This is in keeping with the bleak, bare story Dorothea Lange captured in her photography.A children's book, this is a good introduction to how capturing the faces and emotions with a camera can benefit generations to come and tell the story.DISCLOSURE: I received an uncorrected proof to facilitate a review. Opinions are my own, alone.

I'm so glad to see more picture book biographies like this getting published and this one is a beauty!
