I hardly ever write a review but this book made me soooo angry I had to make this comment. In short, this book is a joke. If one offered an alcoholic advice, he wouldn't take him to the liquor store to find it. But Mr. O'Conner offers advice to those struggling with bad language by exposing readers to the worst of the worst language – if someone didn't know the foul mouth language, he would know it after reading this book. Perhaps somewhere between the covers is some advice how to break the bad habit. One would be much better served finding a book (in general) on how to break a habit – or how to cleanse one's "heart" which is the wellspring of poor language anyway. What a joke of a book.

We use this in school with our students

All the author does is describe the history of swearing or possible origins for swear words. He then goes on to interview people as to the reasons they do or do not swear. There are no solid techniques given to teach the reader how to stop swearing.

I laughed when I got this book from a friend because I did not realize how much I was swearing. I was just getting used to using profane language and sometimes I would catch myself when I was in front of kids. It was starting to become too casual and not just reserved for when I was really mad. However, my friend noticed and got me this book. I read it and found it to be quite helpful in that it gets you to think about the circumstances that you start to swear and tells you to be conscious of not using "bad" words. I have cut back my cussing to now just when I need it for dramatic emphasis.

This unique book addresses a topic that should be more a part of public discourse. It is principled but not, as they say, doctrinaire. The author even makes a case for bad words - don't wear them out!

I'm not sure what's in this book; I haven't read it. But my daughter has. And she eliminated a large part of her vocabulary almost overnight :-). I don't know if it's all attributable to this book. Part of it was surely her own determination to change the way she spoke. We didn't make her read the book. It wasn't even our idea. She heard about it, read it on her own, and told me several times how much she liked it and how funny it was. If you want to change your speech patterns, this seems like an excellent start.

In a hot summer evening when I did book browsing at Barnes and Noble, I found this book and immediately liked it. Due to the relative large price difference, I did not bought it at the bookstore but ordered a copy from Amazon. I am a mathematician and semi-physicist by training and data scientist by vocation, and I never enjoy reading technical books except when I have to for work-related studies (I enjoy theoretical books such as Lectures on Quantum Mechanics or Group Theory in a Nutshell for Physicists or etc.) But let me say I do enjoy reading this book. This book gives a very good introduction to fundamental concepts of natural language processing (NLP) as well as a survey of current NLP landscape (formulations, NLP libraries, applications, etc.). It is also hands-on. Good books of such kind should never be too long (A long book usu. = collection of stuff you can find by Googling). I am glad this book is not too long (300-ish pages), so you can read end to end and not miss every single idea of the authors'. What is particularly appreciated (from my perspective) is that the book has several chapters on the cutting edge NLP methodology (e.g. knowledge graph approach to NLP, chatbot design princples, etc.) Thanks for the good work of the authors!

I’d put myself more in the realm of domain specialist with an interest of how text mining tools could be practically leveraged. The alphabet soup of frameworks and models to text minimum can be confounding.... as unstructured text tends to be for us looking for clearer insights.The authors do an great job of taking you through key concepts and applications, all anchored in Python code (and later some examples from Spark environments). While the code does require some attention to work through if you are not primarily a programmer, they are worth pondering over.To get the full value out of the book, its most worth working live through some of the sample code and libraries. Many of you (as I was) probably will not be able to do this in the first run. But I certainly see this as a resource book I will come back to, once I get more deeply into certain domain applications.If anything, this is helpful to make sense of bridging some of the Babalesque that can happen when data science teams gear up for applied text analysis.

I was disappointed that this book isn't available for Kindle Cloud Reader (in my browser). I often open books on my machine at work to work through the code examples from technical books I'm reading. This limitation means I have to install a Kindle reader app for every machine I want to access the book. Bummer.

It is a very easy read with invaluable insights to basic to intermediate NLP concepts and code snippets. I really liked the fact that a number of relevant libraries were discussed, such as spacy, gensim and the good ol' nltk. Note that this is not an advanced book, but light years ahead of most tutorials or 'recipe' book you see everyday.

The book written by David Miscavige's father rings true and is a clear presentation of the Church of Scientology. Having been exposed to the organization through my father who was heavily involved from my teenage years until a short time before his death, I appreciate learning about this manipulative, evil organization. While my dad was a "public scientology" he was definitely manipulated, used and harmed by the org. He was extremely defensive & controlling and we were not allowed to question or make disparaging statements about scientology. Since his death I feel free to tell the truth. Toward the end of his life, as an 80 year old cancer patient who was suffering from mild dementia church members visited him frequently to extract 44,000 dollars within a 6 week period of time and God only knows how many tens of thousands of dollars in the years prior. I only became aware of this when he started bouncing checks and the pharmacy refused to deliver his needed medications because all his credit cards were maxed out. He asked me to take over his finances. Dollars stopped flowing to scientology, he moved in with me, his physical and financial health improved dramatically. Still the Church continued to call to"check on how he was doing" . Without fail the 3rd w question in was a request for money. It was disgusting .

Uh. Wow. Kind of a book that is the most compassionate way to let the world know your son is a monster. Not a lot of screaming, but acknowledgement of some character flaws, like megalomania and sociopath tendencies. I get some people not carrying if their dad dies, but, the narrator doesn’t seem like a total creep, not like the Kelly’s Dad on Bearing Sea Gold.The most interesting point about Miscavige’s story is that he is critically looking at Scientology and focusing on his son, and the beliefs that he has been imposing on other people. There is actually a lot that David’s father, Miscavige (I’ll just call the dad Miscavige), talks about with regards to the things that are good, or were good, or had beliefs that once spoke to him in the faith. I think that this might be one of the first books I’ve read on the subject that speaks highly of the belief, but condemns the leader. I know that scientology has been a hot item lately, “Going Clear” and Leah Remini’s book are two of the main ones that come to mind when thinking about the church. I’d put this one up there in terms of the authority and the sincerity with which it is written, where as other ones talk about their reasons for joining as almost apologetic, whereas Miscavige isn’t, he’s talking about what the good used to be in it.Miscavige tells the story like you would perceive a father to do; he pays attention to heights and weight when his kids are playing sports. He’s realistic in his relationship with his wife Loretta, admits to hitting her, and doesn’t make excuses about it, just describes it as a matter of fact and part of their relationship. It’s kind of interesting that he acknowledges that she passed away and can’t provide her perspective, it seems a bit sincerer that way. The narratives language isn’t rose colored and painted fluidly either, when David was having an asthma attack Miscavige “smacked him on the ass and he cried, which forced him to exhale and that stopped the attack,” again kind of giving insight into that rough narrative.The asthma plays a big role in Miscavige’s discussion of David and Scientology, as the asthma really limited David, but after Miscavige took him to see some people at the Scientology place his asthma stopped. This is what Miscavige really attributes to David’s turn to Scientology, the idea that it cured him of asthma. Miscavige himself becomes involved because of his situation with his wife and admits some of the psychological remedies Scientology gave him early on. It’s actually kind of neat in his transition to Scientology facets because he’s talking shop about his boys and then goes into theories of Hubbard, but does so very naturally in the dialogue (yes, I know it was co-written, but the tone doesn’t change).Miscavige discusses being accused of rape, acknowledges the churches help during his time of need, and eventually decides to join the church after he divorces his wife. Miscavige is pretty honest about some of the early time in the church when he became involved in 1985, he’s pretty passionate when he talks about music and making music, but then things go a bit downhill. Miscavige’s perspective focuses a lot on the performance aspect of Scientology and how it bilks people into thinking that it was more involved than it actually was, as well as spread further than it actually was.Miscavige admits he was never in the hole, but talks about the psychological impact David’s personality has on others, comparing it to a 1980’s boss, and maintaining entourages that always agreed with him wherever he went in the organization. Miscavige then talks about David’s man-crush on Tom Cruise, and how David sought to woo Tom, but then quickly reflects back to David’s competitive attitude. Highlighting that David didn’t finish school, Miscavige even notes that David played Trivial Pursuit requiring a pop-culture person on his team so as not to lose.It’s kind of interesting that Miscavige hearkens to his own background and talks about David’s inefficiency as a manager and supervisor. There’s a little window of this, which I’m not entirely sure what to make of, especially since David is still the head of the church and it’s been seeming to do pretty well financially. Miscavige eventually flees the church with his new wife, but a lot of it has to do with his music not being as appreciated as before, and his soul dying bit by bit every day.The last quarter of the book focuses on Miscavige’s new life after leaving Scientology. In particular, he did get $100,000 from David to buy a new house. It is a bit surprising that he talks about using the internet for the first time and learning about Hubbard and some of the truths behind him, in particular his military career. Miscavige explains his authorship of the book, being constantly followed by PI’s and Scientology’s denial of this, even when there are federal recordings that David knew about the PI’s tracking Miscavige. Then there’s some family sadness with Miscavige’s children not really interacting with him, Miscavige reflects on Scientology, and then the book ends. Oh, and there’s pictures, which are a nice touch.

I have now read Leah Remini and Jenna Miscavige's books along with this one. They were all great, insightful books into the mysterious Scientology organization. As I said in my other reviews, I just can't understand how people get sucked into this organization and then agree to being brainwashed into staying. Any organization that forces you to dis-connect from your family, do slave labor, take almost all of your hard earned money and treat you like crap is a horrific organization. There are some very intelligent people that are members and a number of members that have "disappeared" over the years, how can people attach themselves to this, unbelievable, but interesting to read about!

This is a hilarious story in which a teeny tiny mouse, who is very, very persistent, causes a big bear, who wants to be alone, to scream, shout, point, and throw a tantrum because . . . because the mouse is just SO persistent. All it wants is a tiny piece of cheese, please, and then it will respect Bear's NO VISITORS sign and go away. The bear, who at first shouts "Unbelievable!" and "Vamoose!" recognizes defeat when it wiggles its mouse ears and twitches its mouse nose. "You win," gasps the bear. "I am undone." The bear gives the mouse a piece of cheese and makes tea for the two of them. And then . . . well, you'll just have to read this delightful story on your own. Not to be missed!

My son checked this book out from the library. He had me read the book several times. We renewed the book as long as was allowed, but I had to show my son it was ordered, before he would let me return the library book. The book was engaging to both of my children. I would recommend this book. He liked it so much, that I ordered "A Birthday for Bear." My son listened to the book once or maybe twice, but it did not hold the same appeal as, "A Visitor for Bear".

I love this boook. I bought an original copy at half priced books for my daughter about ten years ago. Now I give it as a gift to all my friends when I find out they are having a baby.

Having had the opportunity to hear this book being read to a group of children and adults, I already knew what it was like. I enjoyed it so much that I felt compelled to order it to give to my grandchildren. I think it is a great book for children. Just remember' when reading it to them, to use a big gruff voice for the bear, and a teeny, tiny little voice for the mouse.

I purchased this book for my 6 y/o and we loved it! They no longer carry it at the local bookstore, so I was thrilled to find it on Amazon! Bought a number of copies to give as gifts. Really cute story for boys and girls!

I ordered this book and then knit an adorable gray little mouse to compliment it before giving the book to my grandson. After reading the book to him several times, I hid the mouse. He searched for it and was delighted when he found it. Now the little gray mouse shows up in drawers and hanging visibly all over the house and all family members take delight in participating. It's great fun for him to go searching after someone asks, "Where is Mouse today?"...he enjoys the book very much too! He's two-and-a-half.

I bought this book for my children - a 2 yr old girl and an almost 5 year old boy - and they BOTH love it.Frankly, I love reading it. Even my husband enjoyed listening in to tonight's reading.The illustrations and the writing work really well together.The humour is obvious enough for the little ones with a little extra that makes it enjoyable for adults too.The vocabulary choices make it more interesting than many children's books. Accessible, but enough of a stretch that some new words are introduced. (like "whisked" (which my son loves)and "insufferable")It's just adorable and genuine. And I don't mind that it's become the new favorite (which means I can expect to be reading it every night for the next few weeks!)

This is a fantastic story for little ones. The basic premise is that the Bear is a bit of a shut-in and the mouse keeps bothering him, and the Bear eventually learns to love the mouse's company. The artwork is really nice, but what I like best about it is that as mad as the Bear gets, there is never any implied violence (after all, he IS a bear and could easily threaten to eat the mouse, and many kids' books can be disturbingly dark). It's a humorous story with two really likable characters.

It's got a lot of good material, but while it's thoroughly revised, it doesn't feel thorough. Important, obscure terms are mentioned that aren't defined anywhere. Brands are mentioned offhand without any context. Important watches are described in some detail (like the Santos) then not pictured. The index is sorely lacking in entries. It feels more like a large, casual (and under-edited) brochure than a serious reference. For a book of this nature of this size, I expect to occasionally need to pull out a computer to look something up, but I don't think I should have to every few minutes.Also, there're strange errors that leave me scratching my head. For example, on page 195, there's a picture of what's described as the Grand Seiko SBGA11 dated in the book as from 2010... except the dial is the 2017-onward SBGA211! Not to mention most of the watches pictured date no later than the middle of this decade... Now that I'm almost done with this book, I'm left lowering my review from four to three stars because it's really quite an average book.

Overall I like the book but it could be improved. The photography is decent but isn’t the greatest for detail shots which need great lighting and contrast for movement details. You’ll find some blown out highlights and details lost in shadows for some of those. A few typos also made it past the copy editors.Lack of movement shots is probably the biggest downfall of the book in general. Many historical or interesting movements are referenced but then never shown and 95% of the book is pictures of the watch face. There are also watches mentioned in the scarce text that are never shown in pictures which is a little disappointing as well for what is largely a picture book.It’s definitely worth a purchase and a nice book overall. It’s probably that it had such good potential that I was slightly, but not terribly, disappointed.

This is a great and interesting coffee table book. I love watches, and this book tells the history of the watch makers and also explains the complications by each. It's a great book for watch nerds.
