This is a great book. Simon Winchester has a wonderful writing style and is a skillful storyteller. His story is an important one due to the importance of precision instruments in our society. That said, there are a fair numbers of small errors and one more major one in the book.He states that, “Jefferson, while U.S. minister to France…told his superiors in Washington”. Jefferson was minister in France from 1785 to 1789. The act creating a capital district along the Potomac River was signed in July 1790. There was no Washington, D.C. when Jefferson was minister in France. There are lots of small problems in chapter 8 which discusses GPS. I’m the coauthor of "GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphones" which is included in his bibliography. https://www.amazon.com/GPS-Declassified-Smart-Bombs-Smartphones/dp/1612344089He states that Roger Easton, my dad, came up with the idea of using clocks in satellites for a passive ranging navigation system in 1973. In reality, the idea came from a conversation with Dr. Arnold Shostak, father of SETI researcher Seth Shostak, in 1964. He states, “Roger Easton, who at the time worked for the U.S. Navy’s then –named Space Applications Branch in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.” Dad worked his whole Naval Research Lab career at its main office in Washington, D.C. The South Texas fence was a separate radar fence that was intended to be an adjunct to the primary Space fence so that an object’s orbit could be calculated on a single penetration of the two fences. Dad was there in September 1964 trying to synchronize the clocks in the two stations in this fence. He realized that a clock in a satellite could do this and later saw that it could also be used for navigation (following up on his April 1964 conversation with Dr. Shostak referenced above).Winchester then describes the car experiment which showed that passive ranging with clocks would work except he places it in Texas whereas it was in D.C. “The other he kept at the naval station in which he was working in South Texas. While the observers were watching the oscilloscope screens he had hooked up in the lab, he ordered Maloof to drive the car as far and fast as possible down a road, Texas Route 295, which was unfinished at the time and thus empty.”He’s describing the experiment which occurred on October 16, 1964. See page 9 from the “NRL GPS Bibliography - An Annotated Bibliography of the Origin and Development of the Global Position System at the Naval Research Laboratory” which states, “Easton’s passive ranging concept is demonstrated using a side-tone ranging receiver, modified from the South Texas experiment and placed at NRL, and a transmitter in Matt Maloof’s convertible as he drives it down the I-295 interstate. The road is finished but not yet opened to the public. Two Bureau of Naval Weapons representatives, John Yob and Chester Kleczek, observe the experiment."I-295 is the highway next to NRL’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It’s not a state road in Texas. There is a reference to a South Texas experiment in the above account, but the test with Maloof’s convertible was in the D.C. area. In a 1996 interview with my Dad, they refer to the Wilson bridge across the Potomac in relation to the experiment. Wikipedia states that, “The first 7.8 miles (12.6 km) of the route opened on August 7, 1964 when the connecting segment of the Capital Beltway opened.” This fits in with an October 16th test. The most significant error is his assertion that Reagan opened GPS to civilian uses after the shooting down of KAL 007 in 1983. This mistake is common in the literature. However, GPS was a dual use military-civilian system from day 1. The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Program Management Plan 15 July 1974 can be found under resources on my website (gpsdeclassified). On page 2-9, it states that, “The C/A Signal will serve as an aid to the acquisition of the P Signal, and will also provide a navigation signal in the clear to both the military and civil user.” Texas Instruments was making in 1981 the TI-4100 NAVSTAR Navigator GPS Receiver for commercial users. Thus, civilian use was built into GPS in 1974 and a civilian receiver was being sold in 1981. I highly recommend this book in spite of these minor errors.

A well-written and thoroughly engaging read, not that this should come as any surprise from this author. Hopefully the few small errors will be corrected in upcoming reprints. (Wonderful to have the input on some of these by Roger Easton's son, too!)I only have one caveat, which I notice has not been mentioned in these reviews- and it only pertains to the hardcover edition, which is the one I bought. The quality of the illustrations is simply unacceptable, especially for a full-price hardcover edition. This is partly the result of using poor-quality matte paper and partly because some of the illustrations are simply too small. There are numerous examples- nearly every picture, in fact - but here are a few from the last part of the book (where I am at present, having nearly finished devouring it.)- On page 316 there is a picture of the internals of a Seiko quartz watch. It is about 1 3/8" in diameter. Were it not for the accompanying text, it would be all but incomprehensible. On high-quaity gloss paper it would fare better, but not here.- Page 283, a picture of the first transistor, invented by Bell Labs. Poor contrast and detail, a fairly consistent problem with most of the pictures. On high-quality paper it would be OK.And the worst of all, on page 292 is a graph, with included text, of the famous Moore's Law which is, with the exception of the top line header, unreadable. The illustration is full-width (about 4.2") but even on the finest-quality paper it would be largely unintelligible. I measured the type under the headline, under good light, with an eye loupe, with a micrometer (well, this IS a book about precision!) It measured about .016", which is around 1.5pt. Under the loupe, it is clearly spotty, due to the rough surface of the paper, which would not be the case on good, gloss paper, assuming that the industry printing standard is still 2450 dpi. This makes the print on the bottles of Dr. Bronner's soap products look huge in comparison. The type along the diagonal line of the graph is even smaller, probably close to 1pt. This illustration ought to have been on its own page, in landscape mode (and, again, on better paper)I have a friend with the Kindle edition, and the illustrations are fine there. And in the case of the Moore's Law illustration, one can at least zoom in.This is a superb book, but which in its print edition doesn't really do justice to the material or the author, and reflects badly on the publisher. It could be argued that print editions are less popular now than electronic, but if you (in this case, Harper Collins) are going to do a print edition, especially a hard-cover full-price one by a well-known author, it should meet certain print quality criteria, and it seems to me that the publisher has really let us down in that respect.

The microbiome Diet, though very science sounding, is actually a diet uniquely suited for those who have tried various diets in the past and never found results. It's a new approach built upon the principle that the obesity problem many are facing is due to the digestive system being compromised by the foods we are eating - leading to leaky gut, inflammation, increased hunger and cravings, and other health problems ranging from soreness to lack of concentration. The way our food is processed in the body is greatly aided and abetted by microbiomes - bacteria in the gut. When there is an imbalance (lack of certain bacteria or too many bad ones), our health suffers and we gain weight. The diet is based around "Four Rs": 1) Remove the unhealthy bacteria and the foods that unbalance the microbiome; 2) Replace the digestive enzymes that you need for optimal digestion; 3) Reinoculate with probiotics (intestinal bacteria) and prebiotics 9foods and supplements that nourish this bacteria and keep it healthy); 4) Repair the lining of your intestinal walls, which have likely become permeable and are releasing partially digested food into the bloodstream and causing major problems like inflammation. The diet has three phases. In the first, you avoid sugar, eggs, soy, gluten, and dairy (as well as all packaged/artificial foods). This is the heart of the four Rs above. Phase 2 is the metabolic boost. You eat a wider range of foods and introduce some items like milk and eggs. Phase 3 is about maintaining healthy weight loss. You eat about 70% of the phase 2 foods and then some 'goodies' in between. The diet is set up to cleanse the system of the bad stuff, heal your gut, and in the process wean you off the items that cause the insatiable cravings and hunger. At the same time, improve all over health. Recipes and a meal plan are given at the beginning, as well as a shopping list for each stage. Recipes are set up to be made quickly and easily using fairly staple foods. Chicken, salads, seafood, etc.For the recipes, I had a few problems with the directions (e.g., I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm told to "deglaze the vinegar"). As well, with a few I wasn't really sure what was going on (e.g., I'm told to saute garlic and then add wet Kale and let it simmer - but I'm not quite sure how wet the kale should be?). But on the whole, I was able to follow the recipes and they satisfied me - I wasn't left hungry. There were no surprises here - a lot of the recipes are superfood centered, so you'll see similar iterations in other cookbooks that focus on organic and superfoods like cruciferous vegetables and legumes). I wish there was more information about substitutions (e.g., I can't eat seafood and when given an ingredient like apple cider vinegar, I'd like to know if malt cider is an acceptable alternative.)Although there weren't a lot of exotic ingredients (I wasn't able to get jerusalem artichoke or kimchee at my local store), there are resources on where to get many ingredients. One big downside for me was tracking down the huge amount of supplements, which was 7-10 pills a day and some powders. Be prepared - it is a heavy cost up front (perhaps not as heavy in the long run for good health, though). If you are outside of the US, this will be a hard diet to follow.Recipe examples include: minted fruit salad with brazil nuts, rich vegetable soup, jerk cornish game hen, mussels steamed in beer, gazpacho smoothie, stuffed mushrooms, and snacks such as baked kale chips.I've tried the diet for 3 weeks now and the cravings really do go down. I haven't received all the supplements in the mail or tracked down all the ingredients as of the time of writing this, though, and will update later. But the weight is coming off.If buying the Kindle version, the formatting is a bit harder to read than with the book version, so I recommend the physical copy.Reviewed from an ARC.

The method of eating in this book works. Very quickly too.I am NOT a patient of the doctor, but I have been following the method of eating in this book several months before this book came out. I arrived at this diet by studying research on the gut microbiome and figuring out how to implement that research into my own eating. The amazing thing to me is that the doctor's recommended diet and conclusions are similar to my own. And what he has observed in his patients is exactly what I have observed of myself.I have spontaneously lost a lot of weight and six inches off my waistline. My lipids are great, but were statin worthy before I started. I have lost hypoglycemia, allergies of all types, and simply feel great. I felt I was a very healthy person before I started, but the list of improved things is very long.I say "spontaneously" because, as the doctor states, this is not a diet requiring calorie counting. It does not require restricting any particular macronutrient. You eat what you normally eat (minus bad foods listed by the doctor, but this was not a big deal for me) but add gut friendly foods. The emphasis is on inulin, found in garlic, onions, asparagus, and such. I'll add dandelion greens because I enjoy them and they are a better source than a few of the others mentioned. Also probiotic foods. I will also point out that some Korean markets have leek kimchi and scallion kimchi, so one can get a dose of inulin along with the probiotics. Plus authentic Korean kimchi to me is better than the health-store "kimchi".I found that I was losing weight, about 2 lbs per week. Without doing anything other than making sure I got plenty of gut friendly foods. Then my tastes started changing. I'd get out of the blue cravings. One was for raw honey (sorry doc, I know it is on your bad list, but my gut wanted it). I've never eaten it raw since an allergic reaction some time ago. One tablespoon, and that's what I needed. Other similar cravings. Soon I learned to listen to my gut and let it tell me what I needed. It's almost a dialogue between my brain and my gut. I eat what I want, but to be frank what I want is good, healthy food. Now my weight is stable at a healthy level. I eat what I want. But what I want is different from before. I want onions. I want garlic. I want all the good stuff that feeds the gut. The doctor says at various stages you can deviate 90% or 70% from the diet. The funny thing to me is these deviation numbers also seem automatic - I'd say they are about right, but the gut stops you from going to far. It's not something I have to think about.I try to get as much of my fiber as possible from real food. But there are some advantages to supplementation as well. I was previously hypoglycemic, but my symptoms did not fully disappear until I started taking glucomannan. Also, for those of us with cholesterol issues, there are several fibers of benefit. These additional fibers are not in the book.I end with a quotes from the book that perfectly reflects my experience:"Restoring their intestinal health and balancing the microbiome frees them from cravings and compulsions while putting them in touch with what their body needs and wants. It's almost as if they have awakened their 'inner nutritionist', instinctively seeking foods they need to remain healthy, energized, and fit." Exactly! We discovered it independently, but the doctor has a great book!

This is an informative and touching monologue of one of the great geniuses of film.A wonderfulvenue for an actor and a fascinating read for the layman and theater/movie person alike. Mr. Druxmanhas a keen wit and is sensitive to the inner and outer conflicts of the man he has portrayed here asOrson Welles. Bravo!

The great Orson Welles, the genius of film also of stage and radio and TV;"the magnificent Welles" has become a fabulous 2act - 1 person audio book play brought to us by the gifted writer Michael DruxmanThe voice of the narrator is Edward French but he sounds like Welles. As the play moves on it is hard to tell what words belong to Druxman and what is Welles and French's voice becomes Welles' voice. So it is very much like listening to Welles speaking directly to me. By the end of the 'book or play or whatever' I think I know more about the man and understand a little more of the why...(perhaps Welles needed to develop his post-production skills or just not take vacations.)

I never do reviews like this, but I was so disappointed with this purchase that I had to. I used to have the first printing of this book and it was great. I went to buy a new copy because I lost my old one, and I was not happy. For starters it is printed on-demand. The date it was printed is on the last page and it has the same date as when I ordered it, which is fine, however, it is printed from a scanned copy so the quality is horrible. The first printing was printed in black AND blue ink, the reprints are all in black, so there is a big issue with a lot of the graphics (especially when blue, black, and gray are used together.) The best part of this book was the graphics (it is a technical manual!). The writing is great, but the cheep xerox printed look leaves much to be desired. Do yourself a favor and get a more useful used copy of the first printing. - Note: it is still the first edition but not the first printing (there is no changes to the content - just the printing).

[This review applies only to the Kindle version]I purchased the original paperback version when it came out and loved it. Full of neat little illustrations and tons of background data, it was, and still is, the definitive resource book for TNG fans (right next to the Encyclopedia). The Kindle version is terrible. I'm sorry, Amazon, but you should be ashamed of yourself. The text is all there, but the illustrations, for which the book was known for (as another reviewer said, this is a TECH MANUAL, for crying out loud), are small, blurry, and look like somebody literally photocopied them (and not very well). To make matters worse, some of the illustrations are in the wrong place and don't even match their captions...thankfully, I have the original soft-copy book still. Please re-create this for Kindle...it's such a shame, I was so excited to buy this.

I still have the original from the 90s, but wanted a copy I didn't have to worry about wearing out further. While the original printing had crisp, two-color graphics, this was obviously a fairly quick scan/OCR job. The illustrations don't show much detail, and often have incorrect captions due to missing illustrations. The text itself contains numerous and obvious errors from the OCR process (lower-case "L" replaced with exclamation marks, etc.). It is accurate enough, but disappointing that so little care was taken to convert it into an electronic version.

Adding my voice hoping to bring down the star rating. I have the EXACT same story as the other 1 star raters. Had the original book from the 90s. I actually gave it away to a Trekkie buddy because I had read the thing cover to cover but later regretted it. I was excited to get this book back in my library BUT NO! The material is all here but they phoned in the printing. I think Xerox actually published this. I would rather have a used dog eared 90s version than this thing. Some of the illustrations are down right unreadable.

I used to own this in the print version and loved it. Lost it in a fire and decided to go "modern day presidential" with an electronic version on Kindle. I am VERY disappointed in how the artwork transitioned - almost every illustration is blurry and dark, with text that is difficult to read at best. Most of the flowcharts reproduced here are impossible to read. A number of the illustrations do not match the descriptive text. This is a very poor (and lazy) port of the printed book to the Kindle format - it's like the editor was asleep or just didn't care about the end-quality of the product. As to the text, format, thoughtfulness and depth of the information presented: 5 stars for sure. This is one of the best Star Trek related books I have ever seen, the authors of the text did a commendable job. Illustrations are profuse, detailed and well-rendered in the printed version - too bad they are so disappointing on the Kindle. Buy the print copy.

I've been hesitant to buy this for a while because the claims from people about the quality. Once I found out that you can return a Kindle purchase, I bought it. Considering the age of the original publication, I think this converted to Kindle very well. The LCAR style page markings are not present, a few of the graphics look like a copier ran out of ink, but, I have ZERO complaints. My original copy that I bought in '92 is very delicate and I don't want to keep using it for fear of pages coming out... this Kindle version is a perfect substitute. Now, if only Amazon would put the DS9 Manual on Kindle.

If you are a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation and a tech head, "Star Trek The Next Generation: Technical Manual" is a must. It has plans, schematics and illustrations of all the systems on the Enterprise 1701-D, with additions of the shuttlecraft, the captain's yacht, weapons and other aspects of Trek life. Want to know how the Structural Integrity Field works? Or maybe the Transporter or artificial gravity? It's all right here. (Want to know where they go the bathroom on the bridge? Sorry, that's *not* here.) It's all black and white (no color), clearly drawn illustrations and absolutely understandable explanations (if you can call lots of invented theoretical science understandable). There are little sidebars with behind-the-scenes insight into some of the thought that went behind it, who at NASA they consulted and what episode something appeared in. I wish there was lots more of these, but then maybe it would spoil the effect. It's a great reference for Trek modelers and just a fun book to look at if you like this kind of stuff. And it makes you think they really thought about the technology behind daily life fairly seriously (what, no breweries in engineering?!). Published in 1991, this is still a great book to have for a great series.

From the Back Cover

One of George Bernard Shaw's best-known plays, Pygmalion was a rousing success on the London and New York stages, an entertaining motion picture and a great hit with its musical version, My Fair Lady. An updated and considerably revised version of the ancient Greek legend of Pygmalion and Galatea, the 20th-century story pokes fun at the antiquated British class system. In Shaw's clever adaptation, Professor Henry Higgins, a linguistic expert, takes on a bet that he can transform an awkward cockney flower seller into a refined young lady simply by polishing her manners and changing the way she speaks. In the process of convincing society that his creation is a mysterious royal figure, the Professor also falls in love with his elegant handiwork. The irresistible theme of the emerging butterfly, together with Shaw's brilliant dialogue and splendid skills as a playwright, have made Pygmalion one of the most popular comedies in the English language.

** Spoilers***I don't often write reviews with spoilers, but I can't really explain why I like this book so much without talking about the ending. As with many of my reviews of classics, I find that I must review this book in comparison with the movie that I had seen first. The musical "My Fair Lady" is based off of this play to the point that many scenes are even word-for-word. The differences between the musical and this book, though, is huge in my opinion. The story for both "Pygmalion" and "My Fair Lady" is about both Professor Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. Professor Higgins is a linguist who forms a bet with Pickering to covert Eliza from a poor flower girl to a duchess just by cleaning her speech. The musical really focuses on the character development of Professor Higgins. Eliza tries to exert her independence, but she ends up coming back to Higgins like an abused wife comes back to a pouty abusive husband. The costumes and music are so beautiful that we try to believe that Higgins is actually in love with Eliza even though there is absolutely no proof of it. I thought the actors were great in this movie, but I found the story disturbing. The lesson was very male-centric and Eliza's independence meant nothing in the end. She came back to fetch his slippers. Nothing changed for her. From the moment "Pygmalion" was written reader tried to create this sort of love sort between Eliza and Higgins. This caused Mr. Shaw to write a long epilogue explain why a romantic ending such as this was impossible. I completely agree with Mr. Shaw in this."My Fair Lady," portrays inconsistent characters and demeans women. "Pygmalion" is much more consistent and, for a book written by a man, one of the best depictions of women I have ever read.In "Pygmalion," Eliza is actually the focus. Higgins thinks of himself as the perfect Victorian gentleman who is creating a piece of art like in the Greek story of Pygmalion. What we learn in the end, though, is that Eliza was always a person of value even before Higgins came around. Eliza learned to be a lady from Pickering because he treated her like a lady from the beginning. Higgins treated Eliza horribly from the beginning and never stopped. It wasn't Eliza's speech that made her a lady, because we find out she had a fantastic ear for both speech and music, instead, it was actually how she was treated that matters. Higgins never learns this. His horrible manners and rudeness separate him from good society, while Eliza shines wherever she goes. With all the characters of this story, from Freddy to Eliza's father, we learn that there is very little difference between high society and they gutter other than money.Eliza in the end of "Pygmalion" chooses to marry Freddy who loves her. This is as it should be. When being loved and appreciated is so important to Eliza, why would she choose to go back to the horrible treatment of Higgins? Freddy and she open a flower shop with the help of Pickering. Eliza does stay close to Higgins as she does her own awful father, but she has learned self-respect. Once a person learns to value themselves, they can't allow another person to take that away.I know many people who think that this ending is a shame. They like Higgin's bullying ways. I find these are the same people who read romance novels in which male character rapes the female character under the name of "romantic". Even though I like James Bond novels, I most certainly do not agree with his horrible treatment of women. I can like Higgins for who he is, but I am very grateful he chooses to stay a bachelor.Eliza's character has learned to rise up and make her own choices. This isn't a Cinderella story as so many people want it to be. Eliza's soul is still the same. She is a survivor and a fighter. It takes a very strong woman to stand up to a man like Higgins who can twist and turn words to get his way. She is what a woman should be and even gets the support of Higgin's mother in her battle for independence. Mr. Shaw understood well what a woman wants and values. Eliza doesn't try to become a man to fight back. She just fights back. This review may have ruined "My Fair Lady" for you, but I find I can still enjoy the music and costumes just fine. After reading this book, I can even watch the musical with the satisfaction that Eliza doesn't stay in that abusive situation for long. I honestly can enjoy the movie more now after having read the book. Higgins is not Pygmalion even though he wanted to be. Eliza instead is able to show that she always was alive and had value from the very beginning. This is as it should be.I recommend this book to young adults and older. I wish, especially, that women would read this and learn to expect more from their relationships. I wish that woman would look at this portrait of a strong female character and see that you don't have to marry the bully just because you can care about him. Love is more than compassion. I wish that woman would stop writing "romantic" novel based off of abusive relationships. Mr. Shaw is a man who understood women better than many women understand women. One line from "My Fair Lady" that you will never read in "Pygmalion" is "why can't a woman be more like a man?" In many ways, Mr. Shaw actually asks Higgins "why can't you humble yourself enough to learn from Eliza?"

I find it rather sad, as Eliza fights to maintain her dignity (which she had all along, even before her transformation) against Higgins' abuses. I certainly don't find it funny by any means, and I'm sure Shaw didn't, either. I'm glad that Shaw didn't opt for the happy ending, although that would have pleased the crowd.

Good play, somewhat wonky formatting. The first time I downloaded this, it was so unreadable that I deleted it immediately. Oddly enough, when I downloaded the same copy again a few months later, the formatting was much better, so I assume the publisher fixed it. The font still sometimes changes size and style a bit randomly, but it's overall much more readable.

One of the classics and my favorite plays ! The story is timeless and shows us to not judge a book by it cover ! The cover can be replaced so easily , but what's inside does not truly change . Shows the importance of language and culture, but underlines what is truly important and that is something everyone has to figure out on their own , rather than force it on someone else

Great classic! Was an easy read as it was a play so there was little struggle with the language of the time, although Eliza's initial dialect proved challenging to understand, however I found reading it aloud helped decipher what she was saying. Fabulous descriptions of the set from Shaw allowing a reader to really captivate the reality of the location and draw up a setting and acting as a great baseline for directors and set designers. Simple but interesting storyline. Short book and a great quick read!

I liked the story. Not a rags to riches type story, but one of complete personality change through speech, dress, and manners. I got the book out of curiosity after coming across a reference to the story in book that I was reading. Finding that it was available free, clinched it.

So THIS is the proper English language? George Bernard Shaw has written (all those years ago: 1913) a tale of the use and abuse of this great language in a wonderfully satirical way. He certainly had some strongly held convictions about what was the right way to speak and what was the wrong way, even though he has exaggerated his beliefs in the presentation of this play. We are all familiar with the IMproper Cockney speech of Eliza Doolittle and the challenge of 'enry 'iggins to teach her the proper way to speak, thereby making a Lady of her, and it is just as much fun to read the play as it is to see it performed on the stage. This is just one edition of Pygmalion available and it has Notes, Chronology, a Preface, etc. to flesh out the story.

I recently saw this play and I love Bernard Shaw and loved the dialogue. I read it on the plane to visit a friend who read the synopsis on the cover which indicated that it was in favor of exploitive capitalism rather than a satire. Other than that, it's a great play.

#92,093 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I read the two previous books in the series and was looking forward to this one. This series captivated me, to the point that I actually went and purchased the books after reading the first one free on Kindle! This last book was well done. I found that I was beginning to tire of quests and battles, but it was well written and hung tightly together. Adora develops more of a personality and becomes three-dimensional, more than just the spoilt princess who has turned Errol's head. Carr does a good job of continually resurrecting characters from the previous books instead of always adding new ones. This helps give continuity and clarity to the series. The ending was disappointing for me. After such clear description and minute play-by-play, and the forceful build-up to the final determining battle, the climax, for me, was flat. I found it difficult to follow and almost indecisive, as if the author couldn't quite bring himself to write the ending that the books had predicted! The last two scenes (epilogue) were unclear and foggy, which was surprising after such clear and strong storytelling. I found myself wondering what had *really* happened, an unusual occurance while reading Carr's work, and a question that seems destined to remain unanswered.I would certainly recommend these books as excellent fantasy fiction, with consistent details (quite a feat!) Carr draws you into his world and explains without being didactic. Were Carr to rewrite the ending to be more consistent with the story arc, this trilogy would, for me, rank near classics of the allegorical canon.

Fantasy authors use magic and mythology to provide setting, plot, and and character development. Most authors today rely on pagan practices and beliefs to do this. The author of Staff and the Sword instead draws on Christian history and spiritual concepts to build his characters and world. His world follows more closely the one we know than Tolkien’s or Lewis’s, but elements such as how the Holy Spirit communicates and the physical abilities of the heroes and holy men and women show spiritual power in physical form. Having said this, the hero is different than others I have encountered in fantasy novels. The main character is beset with addiction stemming from abuse and neglect. He must overcome these and other great obstacles by choices and work and more suffering, which makes his story more closely resemble our own struggles and path to redemption. The author does not use supernatural elements to cause and solve all problems where other fantasy authors often do. I think this lends to the richness of this story. The one thing most fantasy authors share is a redemption story which requires the protagonist to suffer and die for his people. It is as if the Creator emblazoned this in the mind of all people in all times as one He wanted to tell. The ending of this story is no different though has a beautiful twist which I did not expect. As I think about the character, his desires and personality, though, it fit completely. Great book series for anyone who loves fantasy. I am ammending this review to say that the book is written for teens and above. There are some references to sexual situations that are most appropriate to teens, however, nothing is graphic or overly disturbing. There are also many battles and smaller fights in which the characters kill and are injured. If I am at all uncomfortable with anything in this book, it is the amount of bloodshed in it. The women who throw themselves at the protagonist seem over the top to me as well. All these things are not what I remember most about the story, however. This is truly a beautiful story of redemption first and foremost.

I have finished the trilogy. The five stars are meant for all three books. I have read other reviews in which the writers have eschewed Mister Carr's efforts, claiming them to be less than his Christian tenets might require. "Let me speak plainly." ...Wrong! As I read these books, I kept the remarks of one of those "reviewers" in mind. She/ He admitted to not having finished even the first book, and yet, she/ he proceeded to call Mr. Carr something akin to a heratic.Okay---that being said, it is my recommendation that this work NOT be viewed as Holy Writ, as the reviewer seemingly expected it to be, but as the work of fantasy it truly is. Does it have good and bad people and their beliefs? Uh...yeees! I think that's one of the things we learn in writing, is it not? That there is a Protagonist and an Antagnist? ...etc...Sorry --- anger is a secondary emotion, after all.I recommend the books highly. I bought into all the characters and situations (fantasy, remember?) presented. Are there flaws? I'm sure there are. Could I write it any better? Uh-uh. Is it what I look for in a fantasy book? Yes. No swearing, no sex scenes (romance? yes), violence? Yes---a bit more more at times than others but not to the point that I wouldn't let my 10 year old Grandson read it. Which brings up the point of very good vocaulary. (and maybe this is where the reviewer lost track of the story) The writer doesn't write "down" to anyone. And, so, my Grandson might have to look up some words in order to get the full flavor from the story. I say, "Hurrah!" Would that more writers were like this and not resort to the base and perverse so that they can sell more books to a, "wider range of people", one that only understands the base and perverse. If it sounds like I like this guy, you're right. Read 'em...read 'em all.

This is truly a book for any diver interested in "becoming a better diver". I have a few hundred dives under my belt, and I learned a lot from this book. I wish there had been something like this for me to read after my initial certification 25 years ago.The book is full of safety tips, etiquette and lots more food for thought for the advancing diver. If you've been a dive professional (Divemaster/Instructor) for a long time, this may be old news, but there's good material in here for just about every other kind of diver. It's written in very clear and accessible language. The book also contains very up-to-date survey of the range of experiences the sport has to offer, from liveaboards to "muck diving", wreck diving, cave diving, rebreathers and more. The book does a great job at getting the reader excited about these pursuits while being realistic about the risks and dangers.Highly recommended.

Just finished Simone Priidmore's, Scuba Confidential; An insiders guide to becoming a better diver. I highly suggest this book to the newly certified open water diver as well as the divers out there who have taken some time off or might be a bit rusty. Simone does a great job of breaking down the pitfalls and complacencies we can find ourselves in and not owning up to them when ultimately we are all responsible for ourselves. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will highly recommend to my friends.

If you are a diver, this is a must read... Open water certification only covers so much. This book fills the gap plus some when it comes to information involving the science of diving and the human body. This book also helps understand some tech stuff that helps the recreational diver. I have been diving for 2 years, only 66 dives, but am a " master diver" through SDI. This book helped me learn several things about how the body works that skills classes do not really get deep into.

I really enjoyed this book! It had a lot of good tips for a beginner like me. It has an easy-to-read conversational style and it was definitely worth the price. I docked it one star only because there were several technical chapters in the book that seemed more suitable for advanced divers (gases, in particular), who would find the basic chapters to be very basic indeed. I suspect that my opinion will evolve as I gain experience, but I highly recommend this book for beginners.

Well written text covering subjects of safety, skills, training, equipment, gasses and travel in a different way. There are survival strategies, anecdotal examples, demythologizing deco, dumb things dive pros do, and a multitude of other ways of looking at the what used to be the "same old boring stuff." The book is very interesting and I read all 343 pages in just 2 days."Become a better diver by keeping your mind and eyes wide open"

This is a good book for scuba divers and I can safely say that you will get something out of it no matter where you dive. I might suggest this to somebody earlier in their diving career rather than later, as some things covered you will have figured out for yourself pretty quickly. I would also recommend it for the occasional, or "vacation only" diver, hopefully it will get you out there more!

As a PADI "Advanced" diver I learned a lot from the book. It gave insight into different experiences without the cost and time commitment. By leveraging all this knowledge I feel I have a better understanding of my future direction in the sport.

This book is well laid out and gives a straightforward and practical assessment of what a diver can expect at different levels of training.
