Love this book. Easy reading funny and so true! I would love to read the first book but unavailable for me to purchase.
This book was ok. It was very predictable. More like a nurse complaining about a bad day at work.
Good read, having been in Nursing for ~28 yrs. mostly in Postpartum, some things are similar, no matter where you work!
Quick read basically explains the ER I work at. Loved it.
Yes, grammar and spelling do matter as lack of both stop the reader and are distracting. The author's first book was better in this respect.As for the stories-- each one is too short as if written in haste. It's an entertaining read and makes one realize what nurses go through. That said, I wish the author had more compassion and didn't use a condescending tone regarding the patients. Unfortunately he comes across (in both books) as a nurse with an ego. I'm sure he is excellent at nursing but he makes it seem that the patient who is docile and smiling through pain is the best way to behave in an ER. Yes, there are many horrible patients out there, but the book could use a dose of compassion and a bit more of true, non-wry humor.
Dani is a born storyteller! (And I got validation that I'm a good patient!) He clearly loves his job, and as a retired cop, I can relate to the gallows humor. Like I said, I literally just busted up so much, I had tears.This, after lying down to read a "bit", the fun, (and sun), just vanished.For anyone who wants to hear the truth and get a great laugh, as well as insight, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!P.S. Think you're pregnant...BUY A STICK!
The first place I worked as an RN was a small rural hospital that covered a large area. The ER was just another part of the day for all of us. These stories reflect so much of my nursing life, but especially the first two years of my nursing career. Mr. Jacobs is an excellent writer, well edited, and, I suspect, a superior nurse. His description of a couple of patients is memorable. Medical junkies of all types as well as new and old nurses should read this book.
This book, more than any other I have read, accurately depicts what the nurse sees and goes through every shift in the emergency room. The author is correct as well in stating that when you lose your sense of humor in the emergency room, you will also lose your compassion and your ability to cope with the patients you see. Please be patient with your emergency room nurse, you never know what is going on behind the curtain.
