Once again Mr. Patten has brought Titus to life in this follow up novel, Miami Chill. Titus, in his adopted city of Miami, is trying to remain off the radar but gets caught up in doing the right thing.Thankfully, we are not burdened with Titus being a small arms expert that constantly thinks about firearm designs and their uses. He is not a former Navy SEAL, CIA/NSA/EPA Operative, or a decendant from a family of Assassins.Nope. What we have is a "Security Professional" that works bars and concerts, wondering about his life choices, and tormented by the murder of his fiance, Ariel. He is a no-nonsense, street wise, impulsive, and easily mentally derailed by Detective Sofia DeJesus-Montero when she is present.Titus will keep you laughing with his Life Observations, the characters are full of depth, and the story line will keep you up reading long after you should have stopped.Mr. Patten has a gift for story telling, and Titus is unlike all the other Thriller main characters out there. Titus is Fresh. Like Farm-to-Market Vegetable Stand Fresh. So stop reading reviews and start clicking on Buy This Book. We need to incentivize Mr. Patten to get Titus back on the shelves with Book #3.

John Patten’s latest mystery is fast, witty, and incredibly hard-boiled. It reads like an episode of Miami Vice written by Quentin Tarantino. Southern Florida and the Miami underworld come to life under Patten’s talented pen. If you are a fan of Travis McGee, Sam Spade, or Mike Hammer, you are going to love Titus. Patten’s writing is so sharp you could shave with it, his characters leap of the page fully formed in the reader’s mind, and his dialogue has its own sort of poetry.Miami Chill picks up where the first book left off, with Titus searching for the man who killed his lover. A chance encounter lands Titus in a world of hot water and this time three seductive sirens are all vying for Titus’ help. The hero has a chance to stretch and grow in this second book. When Titus stumbles onto a case involving human trafficking and kidnapped girls, he dives in head first and cuts a swath through Miami that would leave Don Johnson jealous. He does it all in signature Titus style too, with plenty of attitude and laugh out loud quips. The mystery is top notch and will keep you turning pages until the very end to figure out who the bad guys are and who’s on the level. There are twists and turns aplenty and the last hundred pages are a roller-coaster ride of cross and double cross. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; John Patten is the new voice in hard-boiled detective fiction!

After reading book one of the Titus series (Miami Burn), my wife and I were eagerly awaiting book 2 to come out, and when it finally did we devoured it. This series, in full honesty, was our favorite series of 2018. Really looking forward to book 3.Book 2 is darker than book 1... Titus is back, and his demons have bubbled so close to the surface that they are ready to burst through. In fact, at times they do, as the internal conflicts and tension within Titus become as riveting as the external conflicts and tensions at play around him.Over all, Mr. Patten has developed a winning set of characters that are enjoyable to read and easily invested in. He also has fun with many of the secondary characters, which you tell through the subtle (and sometimes NOT so subtle) references to known celebrity figures. The story is smooth and well laid out. In the span of a single page I'd find myself on edge with anticipation from the action, then laughing out loud from one of Titus's many sardonic quips, then completely taken by surprise by a twist in the storyline, then finally catching my breath wondering "what just happened?!?". You may read that statement and ask ,"Are you saying the book jumps around a lot?". And the answer is No, it's the opposite. The story is focused constantly building toward the climax. Mr. Patten is very talented, and has an engaging writing style and a honed ability to keep you relaxed and on edge of your seat at the same time. The action is well written and descriptive. At times some of the scenes played out like a blockbuster movie in my head. (No spoilers, but when you get to the boat fight scene in the everglades... hold onto your breath and life preserver, it's an exhilarating ride. Move over James Bond, Jack Reacher, and Jason Bourne - Titus has arrived. In summary, If you like detective stories, likeable characters, good sarcastic humor, and solid writing pick up this series.

Author Patten is a treasure to the hard-boiled genre. His narrative and dialogue sizzle, reminiscent of Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald, and Robert Parker. Miami Chill puts you right on the mean streets, with all the glitz and seams. It grabs you from the first line and doesn’t let go. Titus is a person who can solve problems. Though tough on his enemies, he has a soft heart for the innocent in need of his help. He is a character you will remember, and you will long for the next book. I put this right up there with the best of today's thriller and mystery authors.

Put me down as a true Titus fan, you can not help to love his character. Titus works in security jobs to make ends meet. He happens to be in the right places to help others, currently he is involved with trying to stop a human smuggling of young girls. The characters and action are great, remember Titus is seeking an answer to has killed his fiancee Areil, read to find if he finds his answer.

Have read both Miami Titus books. They are very very good. Kept my attention throughout each book. Looking forward to reading the next one. Titus is a very complex and fascinating character.

Yeah, OK, it upholds the hereditary lines it claims. Very well. I enjoyed it. It felt good to read about things and events relevant to me. A bit forced in some regards, but hey - it is fiction. Titus is overdone, but that is what many of us like out here in readerville.
