This is a nice compact dictionary for a beginner or intermediate student who only needs an immediate reference. The paper quality in my edition is fine and the print is readable, black on off-white paper. It contains a grammar section and a verb section at the beginning to brush up, and identifies Canadian french words. I don't know what some people were expecting for the price, but it will do the job.
I will first start out by stating I worked for a Doctor for many years that was French and spoke French. I wanted to learn the language and I did learn to speak some and was able to understand the French language. I live very close to the Canadian Border so it came in handy having so may French speaking people coming to our office or shopping around the town. I then had a brain aneurysm which hit me like a bullet in the head, after recovery which took quitesometime, I could never regain the French language again, luckily I could speak any language. Now many years later I want to get that part back as I have lost so many other things in my life since. This dictionary which I ordered the paperback edition (New) first all looked to me like OMGoodness !! Then I started to read the beginning of the book itself and there is where I had to start , it explains how this dictionary works and teaches the language. Once I figured that out I was on my way , not easy for me but I will get there one word at a time. The format is actually quite simple and self explanatory it gives the words in either French or English , there are two parts to this dictionary which makes it super nice. Example : a word in French -amour [amur] , love , passion.That was just an easy quick example but most are the same format. This makes a great dictionary for any student that has to learn the language of either French or English because it teaches both. It's great for anyone that wants to learn to speak and write French because it makes it easy to do , I had looked at others and gave up but this Merriam Webster one has kept me going and I will learn to speak and write the French language again.If I'm able to do this anyone can , trust me: une bonne affaire !
It appears to have a phonetic alphabet (the symbols next to words, which means it does not have barely helpful English pronunciations), which is sort of helpful for pronunciations, & sort of helpful if you are making written flash cards.HOWEVER, if you are trying to learn pronunciation, look for one with the INTERNATIONAL phonetic alphabet.This DOES NOT distinguish between "a" as in patte & "É‘" as in pâte.It does NOT distinguish between the voiceless uvular fricative (distinguished as "χ" in the IPA) as in "proche," & the voiced uvular fricative "Ê" as in regarder.I would go with one like Collins instead.If you want to really advance at French, you may want to also get a monolingual dictionary like Le Petit Robert.
A classic Merriam-Webster "pocket" resource which aims for coverage at the cost of depth, but covers your needs for a huge range of needed associations. I prefer the Larousse French Student Dictionary for its pedagogical value and user friendliness (but with 1/5th the number of words and a larger physical footprint), but that is not the purpose of the Merriam-Webster reference book. My only nick against the product - which is what it sets out to be at a price and size point that should make one happy - is the binding was poor, with the cover separating from the glue paperback spine, but luckily rubber cement is not a stranger here, so that was fixed with less trouble than a return or exchange.
This is your basic bilingual paperback dictionary that us old school folks are still using. (I have the impression that most are now using online versions these days.) This 2005 printing from Merrian-Webster replaces my old 1962 version and is considerably expanded and revised. For example, this new dictionary includes Canadian French terms.The first section of this new reference book has a longish section on French grammar and usage that looks useful.Altogether, an excellent dictionary that is small enough for easy carrying and use in classroom or elsewhere.
I bought this book because I was required to pass a graduate language examination in French. I was, at first, a little worried because this dictionary seemed quite small to me. I was worried that it would not be comprehensive enough for me to pass my test, but I was pleasantly surprised. I used it on my test and I passed quite easily. There are two very helpful aspects to this dictionary. First, it contains a lot of special usages and phrases. This helped me in a number of places on the test. If you have ever tried translating you know that sometimes it is impossible to make any sense out of a sentence by simply translating each word in the sentence literally. Sometimes there are special phrases that have their own conventional meaning and change the literal meaning of the words in the phrases. I ran into a couple of instances of that on my language test and in every case this dictionary had the special phrasing included in its definition of the word. I found that quite helpful. The second thing that is quite helpful is that in the front of the book there is a list of one hundred irregular verbs and their conjugations. This also helped me a great deal on my test. I have a feeling that most dictionaries contain special usages and phrasing and at least some list of irregular verbs, but I was worried that due to the small size of this dictionary, it would not contain enough. That did not turn out to be the case at all.The main reason I am writing this review is just in case there are other people out there who need to pass a language test and have the same doubts about this dictionary I had. From my own experience I can say fairly confidently that this dictionary should be more than adequate for anyone out there taking a graduate language examination. I would not, therefore, recommend spending a bunch of money to get a bigger, more comprehensive, dictionary. This should be all you need.
