I was very excited to see Jenny Holiday had written a M/M romance, and she didn't let me down. Jesse and Hunter connect on a train ride while they are both going through major life upheavals. Hunter is a hospitalist. Don't worry if you don't know what that is. Most people don't. Hunter is used to explaining it. Jesse is an aspiring rock star, but he keeps getting in his own way. Hunter is determined to never be put in a closet again by a lover, and Jesse has been put there by his manager.This book is elevated by wonderful writing, beyond the tropes of friends to lovers and the career keeps the man in the closet. Hunter and Jesse are real and relatable and interesting, and when they come together, the fireworks are amazing. I couldn't stop reading til I was done.I did NOT receive an ARC. I reviewed this book because I loved it!
I would have never have bought this book if not for the Amazon reviews. I found someone who seemed to have my taste in books and they raved about this book and so I reluctantly downloaded the sample. Rock god is just not a trope that sings to me ( all puns intended) but this book was much better than I expected, even with all the raves. Jesse and Hunter felt real, their attraction and friendship felt true, the sex was undeniably hot, they had lives outside of the romance. It was well written, with no weird punctuation or sentences I had to read twice to figure out what they meant. It was hot and fun with a twist of angst (but not to much angst)Highly recommended. I'm off to look for more by Jenny Holiday
I grow increasingly convinced that Jenny Holiday is incapable of writing a book I don't fiercely love. Like the first book in the Famous series, this is another slow burn, friends to lovers story, this one a M/M romance where the first book was a M/F romance. Can I just say, I love the inclusion of more than one type of couple in this series? Usually you see a series that's all M/F, or all M/M, but I think this is my first series with a straight couple in one book and a gay couple in another. And apparently slow burn friends-to-lovers stories are my new favorite.Jenny Holiday writes a mean slow burn romance. Gah. Words, there are none. Jesse Jamison is on his way to stardom with his band, Jesse and the Joyrides. (LOVE the band name!) He's got this formula he follows so he knows who to sit next to on the train to avoid conversation (which is hilarious, smart, and adorable) but makes the choice to sit next to a super hot guy (Baby Silver Fox, he calls him), whom he winds up really enjoying talking to.Hunter (aka Dr. Baby Silver Fox...) just got out of an 8 year long bad relationship where basically his boyfriend kept him in the closet in regards to his family and friends, so he's moved to Toronto for a fresh start. He's a hospitalist (uh, basically a pediatrician for the hospital instead of at a medical practice?) and oh, my god, could there be a more perfect man alive? (The answer is no, there could not.) Fast forward a few years after Jesse and Hunter's meeting on the train, and one of Hunter's, Avery, is a huge Jesse and the Joyrides fan. I want to keep talking about how they meet up again and become friends etc. etc., but really, just read the book. I'm sitting here trying to write this review and I've got a stupid grin on my face just remembering this book, especially certain Hunter/Jesse scenes that I want to talk about but I don't want to ruin it with spoilers! And not only are the leading characters amazing, the side characters are also a delight, especially Avery and the guys that make up Jesse's band (but especially Billy, LMAO!)This is the second book in the Famous series, but it can be read as a stand alone. There are some minor spoilers for the first book in the series, Famous , but frankly they're barely passing mentions so you're unlikely to spoil anything for yourself. That being said, Famous is also an amazing read, so if you haven't read it yet, what are you waiting for?!
People criticize Romance because "you know how it ends." Ah, but, as in real life, it isn't the end that's most important. It is the journey.There are quite a few things I loved about this particular journey, or hated, depending on the instant you asked me. I am a direct person, but I know so many people who are not. So, characters being iffy and unsure, and silent when they might've spoken, and particularly the ways Jesse and Hunter act and react, out of different incentives, different fears from each other, play out beautifully in this story. It's well-written, simplified in a few places to keep the subplots from intruding (but I like subplots, so I always notice), and there's very little explaining when it's more efficient to SHOW the reader what the character's thinking and feeling. I love that. She trusts us to keep up. :)
This story rocked! (Pun intended ðŸ˜)The life of an upcoming rock star is fraught with uncertainty, hard work, hard playing sacrifice and choices. Sometimes times those choices are rewarding when they lead to that goal of stardom. Sometimes the choices made come with the sacrifice of loneliness and personal heartbreak.These two lonely men made many personal choices that, though satisfying professionally, left them bereft of emotional fulfillment. Everyone needs that special someone who completes you. Thankfully these two lovely men worked through the many obstacles thrown in their path and found their HEA.
This is a 2nd edition of a prior published Riptide book. Nowhere did it mention this was a 2nd edition on the amazon page which is a pet peeve of mine. Fortunately I didn't have this one in my library already or I would have been going back for a refund.This is also another predominately m/f writer picking up a m/m plot. I think she did a pretty good job with this one. I liked it. The writing, characters, story and editing were all very strong.
First, this book was originally title "Riptide" -- Oh how I wish Amazon would put that right up front in the book description/information...Anyway, apart from that, this was a good, well paced, well-written, believable (pretty much) and delightful romance, complete with humor, angst, joy, and just enough romance. I would definitely read more by this author!
