I only studied about three days with this book before taking the test and I passed. Note, I am a history major and knew a lot of this already and just brushed up on things. Some of the test questions from this book were almost identically to those on the test. My CLEP test had a lot of different political theory questions (communism, Marxism, etc.). My test really didn't have many photo questions. I would recommend this book for anyone needing to take this CLEP test. I actually wish I had taken more CLEP tests than classes because I could have easily passed other tests with these books.
I have taken five other CLEP tests including Western Civ I and though I do recommend the REA guides as they helped me pass each test, this failed to capture most questions that were on the actual CLEP test. I went over the book numerous times and memorized each practice test question but only scored a 47. Look for other guides for Western Civ II or get an REA guide for another test.
This book is intended as a review only. However, even with that in mind, the material covered in this book is inadequate to confidently pass the CLEP exam. It does not provide sufficient coverage of art, literature, maps, or women’s contributions, all of which are tested on the CLEP exam.
So here is the deal. I bought this to study for my CLEP. I worked hard, reading the book, taking the online tests offered by coupon in the book, re-read parts, re-took tests until I was a strong 95%+ performer on all of the practices tests. I took the CLEP today, and found the material I studied only covered maybe 15% of the questions I faced. I squeaked out a 53 on the exam, but was darned lucky. THe book and tests are informational, but sufficient on their own to prepare. Fortunately I had education in some relative areas that helped me over the top. Caveat Emptor!
I am half way through and it is a nice history book. The CLEP test is half about culture and art, though. Remember, many schools count this CLEP as a history requirement, a humanities requirement, and a global/historical awareness requirement. I failed the test once because I didn't know it was going to be dominantly weighted with questions about insignificant artist that had little place in history. This book has none of that.
So far the hardest of the CLEP exams, but this book and the official study guide did the job. Get in the 90%+ range on the practice tests and pass the real test. Read the book once, did the online exams 2 or 3 times, passed the real test. 4 of 4 so far. Online practice tests are the most helpful.
The online access codes for this product don't work at first. Fortunately, customer service got back to me within 48 hours and they had my online access up and running. This was my primary study guide for the Western Civ II Clep. I took my time and spent about two to three weeks studying. I read through the book twice and took only one of the practice exams.Using this book, I ended up passing my CLEP with a 61. Alot of the material that was in the test I saw in this book. I would recommend this book to a friend. Just remember that the online access codes may not work at first so you may have to contact customer service.
This book did not prepare me for the CLEP test. Test questions were nothing like the practice tests. The information in book did not cover all the details that were included on the test. I read this book 3 times and took the practice tests multiple times and was confident that I knew the material. The CLEP test appeared foreign - a lot of questions about things the book did not even mention. Very big disappointment.
