What a lovely and hilarious read. Mr. Lincoln fearlessly explores Russia and to the readers delight we can ride along with him through culture shock and sobering learning's as he courts Russian women, drinks vodka (obviously), mistakenly offends everyone and stumbles through quite an expanse of surprising tidbits of Russian life so foreign to any human outside of Russia.These little stories of personal interactions that only someone traveling far outside the realm of a tourist would experience are simply magical. Marshall's writing style is sophisticated yet easy to consume. He quickly takes you deep into his funny travel experiences as if you were standing next to him.You WILL laugh out loud. You will learn a lot about how the Russian's are behind the emotionless faces, how they really see American's and that (spoiler) berries are, in fact, not a fruit or vegetable...they are just, well, berries.Pour a cup of tea or a shot of vodka (or both) as you dive into the modern quirky world of the Russian people.

As a beginning Russian student, I look for content about Russia and Russian often, and I suppose that's how I ended up here. What the author presents feels too lengthy to pull off as a blog post, but is too short and far too shallow for a "book" as it stands. The numerous typos suggest that it was published with no effort to proof read and the transliteration felt odd and clunky. I would have been happier to see actual Russian when Russian was being used and suspect that the target audience for a work such as this has enough of a grasp of Cyrillic to have been able to follow along just fine. This was a decent read, but I electronic more for the asking price.

A very funny and insightful look at some of the differences between American and Russian culture - presented through personal anecdotes of the author. Mr. Lincoln also seems to be a well traveled author, and the things he's chosen to highlight are not just 'different' from America but uniquely Russian. His story telling and humorous style of writing (sometimes channeling the dryly sarcastic, observational wit of Nick Hornby - High Fidelity, About a Boy, et. al) make the book such a fast read, leaving you wanting more.Отлично и молодец!

What a great book! I was unable to put it down from the moment I started reading. I was laughing out loud as if I were at a comedy club! Highly recommend to everyone that enjoys reading books that are both factual and hilarious! Very well written Marshall Lincoln!! I hope you continue writing as I am already looking forward to your next book!

If you're planning to visit Russia, be sure to read this. It's an easy read and shares good advice (with stories) about some of the cultural differences. Of course it undoubtedly doesn't cover everything that would be good to know, but it's a good start. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing, Marshall. :)

I really enjoyed reading this book. Once I started reading it I was unable to put it down. It's very amusing! I very much enjoyed the author's writing style and sense of humour. The book reminded me of the importance of traveling, and the lessons that you learn throughout your travels about yourself and the world around you.

As a russian girl i should say that Marshall Lincoln really got the russian soul. Lots of things are very true and amazing how he was able to capture the cultural differences that noone else would pay attention to. Spend few hours of laughing alone in the cafe with this book. Highly recommended for russians and those who want to understand russians)

Very clever way of pointing out differences and making it funny. Having adopted Russian kids and spent time over there, I have experienced many of the things listed.

As a teacher, any book by Seymour Simon is a welcome addition to my library, especially now that informational text/nonfiction is being stressed on Common Core.

This is a good book to illustrate what can happen during an earthquake...something that might help if a person found themselves in a similar situation.

Since I had read so many of Simon's books, I decided to go further into study of the earth. The earthquake book was very well written and easy to understand if you don't want to go into total tech talk.

Seymour Simon's 1991 book gives an excellent and terse overview of the important ideas about earthquakes. With key terms defined simply but accurately, all accentuated by large color photographic depictions of the effects of earthquakes, Simon explains the pertinent information: what causes earthquakes, what happens during an earthquake, and the different types of earthquakes.The book can be read from cover to cover, or bit by bit; each two-page spread stands fairly solidly on its own. The impact of the damage earthquakes can inflict is immediately apparent when the book opens with a stunning photograph of the way an earthquake turned "railroad tracks into twisted ribbons of steel." The most amazing photo in the book shows the way a wooden fence was "broken and offset eight feet" by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.Simon takes what could be a very frightening concept for a young child and explains it in such a way as to make earthquakes more logical and less arbitrary. The final page of the book might be the best place for a nervous child to start reading, as Simon gives some suggestions of what to do during an earthquake. The book closes with the calming reassurance that the chances of being hurt in an earthquake are very slim.This book does not include a great deal of detail, but I think it does a good job of what it is intended to do: introduce a child to the subject of earthquakes. The photographs are my favorite part.

Children living in areas where natural disasters, such as earthquakes, do not occur may not fully understand the true destructive powers of this earth-shaking phenomenon. This book does its best to render earthquakes understandable. To do so, it incorporates full pages of color photographs of destroyed buildings and houses. Having been published in 1991 originally, the book may have originally served as an answer to those children wishing to know more about the notorious 1989 San Francisco quake. I myself was 11 at the time, and curious about this bizarre force of nature. This book does much to show a variety of different quakes from around the world, and its large graphs are very helpful as well. Yet something about the presentation is displeasing to the eye. Full page pictures have no border and seemingly slip off the page. They tend to show houses destroyed by quakes without giving much thought to showing the earthquake-resistant houses being built at the time. Also, there isn't a single footnote or credit at the end of the book. Seymour Simon is notorious for his steadfast refusal to cite his sources in his non-fiction books. There is no denying that this is an interesting topic. I especially liked the informative section in the back that tells the reader how best to survive an earthquake on their own. And this book would read well in class, though perhaps students should look at it personally themselves to better understand the graphs and maps included. However, I urge those wanting a complete earthquake source to search out better cited non-fiction books, if they can.

As a fellow migrant to Australia albeit at an earlier time, I felt the author’s portrayal of the experience was accurate and insightful. Both my husband and I were interested in reading about the breakup of the former Yugoslavia from the perspective of someone who was impacted by the events, and even more historical analysis would have been fine with us. The book was easy to read and the disarming humor was an added element. It is easy for me to recommend this book.

This is a delightful book! It is simultaneously funny and sad. It takes place on multiple levels and each one touches the reader's soul. For those who have been displaced, either voluntarily or involuntarily, this book will resonate because of the universal feelings of nostalgia for what is left behind and hope for what lies in the future. I will not summarize the plot- it is not necessary. Suffice it to say that this book speaks to those who, having uprooted once, end up belonging everywhere and nowhere for the rest of their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir and look forward to more stories from Ms. Stefanovic.

I bought this book after hearing a couple of the author’s stories on The Moth. I was intrigued to know more. Her book is wonderful and I read it quickly in my every spare moment. Her writing is beautifully descriptive about people and places. Her memoir explores her experience as a teenager and as an immigrant. I also appreciated how she weaves in how the decade of wars in the former Yugoslavia affected every aspect of her life. Terrific book.

I loved this book. It starts out as a bit of comic fluff, but the book is anything but. The self-aware author recounts her young life in Yugoslavia and Australia in a way that reveals both her inner life and the lives of those around her, including those affected by the conflicts in what was once Yugoslavia. A very good read. A page-turner.

Hilarious and poignant. As a native of Serbia who grew up in America during the same years as the author, I have much to relate to, to laugh over, and to cry over. So glad I've discovered this book. Reminds me I am not alone in trying to understand and integrate my tumultuous heritage and my present-day life.

One of the best books I've ever read, a magical and unforgettable experience. I'm very thankful to the author for this. The book will be an unforgettable journey in time and space for anybody from countries that no longer exist and for anybody with a mixture of culture backgrounds. I also highly recommend it for anybody with an interest in the countries that once formed Yugoslavia. For those who fit none of the categories it will still be an exciting read.

THUPTEN JINPA is a former monk and holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University, where he also worked as a research fellow. I only studied about three days with this book before taking the test and I passed. Note, I am a history major and knew a lot of this already and just brushed up on things. Some of the test questions from this book were almost identically to those on the test. My CLEP test had a lot of different political theory questions (communism, Marxism, etc.). My test really didn't have many photo questions. I would recommend this book for anyone needing to take this CLEP test. I actually wish I had taken more CLEP tests than classes because I could have easily passed other tests with these books.

I have taken five other CLEP tests including Western Civ I and though I do recommend the REA guides as they helped me pass each test, this failed to capture most questions that were on the actual CLEP test. I went over the book numerous times and memorized each practice test question but only scored a 47. Look for other guides for Western Civ II or get an REA guide for another test.

This book is intended as a review only. However, even with that in mind, the material covered in this book is inadequate to confidently pass the CLEP exam. It does not provide sufficient coverage of art, literature, maps, or women’s contributions, all of which are tested on the CLEP exam.

So here is the deal. I bought this to study for my CLEP. I worked hard, reading the book, taking the online tests offered by coupon in the book, re-read parts, re-took tests until I was a strong 95%+ performer on all of the practices tests. I took the CLEP today, and found the material I studied only covered maybe 15% of the questions I faced. I squeaked out a 53 on the exam, but was darned lucky. THe book and tests are informational, but sufficient on their own to prepare. Fortunately I had education in some relative areas that helped me over the top. Caveat Emptor!

I am half way through and it is a nice history book. The CLEP test is half about culture and art, though. Remember, many schools count this CLEP as a history requirement, a humanities requirement, and a global/historical awareness requirement. I failed the test once because I didn't know it was going to be dominantly weighted with questions about insignificant artist that had little place in history. This book has none of that.

So far the hardest of the CLEP exams, but this book and the official study guide did the job. Get in the 90%+ range on the practice tests and pass the real test. Read the book once, did the online exams 2 or 3 times, passed the real test. 4 of 4 so far. Online practice tests are the most helpful.

The online access codes for this product don't work at first. Fortunately, customer service got back to me within 48 hours and they had my online access up and running. This was my primary study guide for the Western Civ II Clep. I took my time and spent about two to three weeks studying. I read through the book twice and took only one of the practice exams.Using this book, I ended up passing my CLEP with a 61. Alot of the material that was in the test I saw in this book. I would recommend this book to a friend. Just remember that the online access codes may not work at first so you may have to contact customer service.

This book did not prepare me for the CLEP test. Test questions were nothing like the practice tests. The information in book did not cover all the details that were included on the test. I read this book 3 times and took the practice tests multiple times and was confident that I knew the material. The CLEP test appeared foreign - a lot of questions about things the book did not even mention. Very big disappointment.
